TAMMY GRIMES (Mme. Alexandra) Roddy McKowell once invited Sir Noel Coward to a New York City cabaret to see 'this remarkable girl' perform songs of the theater. Tammy Grimes appeared on stage in silver sequins and proceeded to sing eighteen Cole Porter songs. Mr. Coward "grinned, rose above it," and offered Miss Grimes her first Broadway role as Lulu in Look After Lulu and, therein launched a theatrical career of stellar magnitude. She was The Unsinkable Molly Brown for which she won the Tony Award. The role of Amanda in Noel Coward's Private Lives again brought her a Tony Award. Miss Grimes has since played many memorable roles both on Broadway and Off, including Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street, Elvira in High Spirits, Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest, Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit and Cherie in Bus Stop. Her directors have included Sir Noel Coward, Dore Schary, Gower Champion, Stephen Porter, Brian Bedford and Herbert Berghof. In addition, Tammy has played a variety of Shakespearean roles, including Kate in Taming of the Shrew, Maria in Twelth Night and Mistress Quickly in Henry IV. Recent television credits include The Equalizer and St. Elsewhere. Feature films include The Runner Stumbles, Somebody Killed Her Husband, among others. Her latest film, Mr. North, co-starring Lauren Bacall and Robert Mitchum will be released this spring.
