Kooky Girl's Success
The sprightliest new nightclub chanteuse in New York is 24-year-old Actress Tammy
Grimes who took on a singing job as a way to get back to the stage. Using the newest
show-business jargon, Tammy admits, "I look kooky," meaning cuckoo. But
her reverse approach to tunes indicates she is not nearly so kooky as calculating.
Tammy makes the torrid songs seem tame, the sophisticated simple, the sweet saucy.
She does all this so winningly, with so little voice and so much expression, that
she has kept Julius Monk's Downstairs at the Upstairs filled.
With her husband
Christopher Plummer in a lead role of Broadway's J.B., Tammy likes working
the same hours as the man of the house. This won't change. When Noel Coward came
in to hear her sing, he stayed on to ask her to read for his next Broadway show.
Tammy did. Noel signed her and soon she will be back where she wanted to be- on the
stage.
