We Have Always Lived in the Castle Playbill, Biography, October, 1966
SHIRLEY KNIGHT's (Constance) remarkable range as an actress covers
musical comedy, Shakespeare, Chekov, and modern drama. She has just returned from
England where she starred in the film version of LeRoi Jones' controversial play,
Dutchman, which she also played on stage on the West Coast. She has appeared
in nine motion pictures and twice has been nominated for an Academy Award for her
performances in The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs, and Sweet Bird of Youth.
She most recently was seen as Polly in Sidney Lumet's film, The Group. Miss
Knight's first love is the stage. On the West Coast and Philadelphia's Playhouse
in the Park, she played the title role in the operatic spoof, Little Mary Sunshine
and demonstrated her versatility by playing "Juliet" for six weeks
at the Shakespeare Festival at the Robin Hood Theatre in Wilmington, Delaware. She
made her off-Broadway debut in Roger O. Hirson's Jouney To The Day. On Broadway
she won critical acclaim for her performance as Irina, the younger sister to Kim
Stanley and Geraldine Page in The Three Sisters in the Actors Studio Theatre's
all-star production. Last season she again acted off Broadway in Rooms, two
one-act plays by Stanley Mann produced by her husband Gene Persson. A frequent guest
star on television, she has starred in more than 150 different roles on major dramatic
programs on both coasts, and recently appeared as "Miss Julie" in a television
special for CBC in Canada.
