SHIRLEY KNIGHT (Janet) is that rarity, an actress equally adept at modern drama, the classics and musical comedy. Her versatility is evident both in her work in films and on stage. She last appeared on Broadway in Hugh Wheeler's adaption of Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle and since starred in Richard Lester's film Petulia and Francis Ford Coppola's soon to be released film tentatively titled The Rain People. For the past year she has lived in London whre she appeared with the famous Bristol Old Vic. She has appeared in eleven motion pictures and twice has been nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs and Sweet Bird of Youth. She won critical acclaim for her performance as Polly in Sidney Lumet's The Group and received international acclaim for her performance in the film version of LeRoi Jones' Dutchman for which she won the Golden Lion award for best actress at the Venice Film Festival as well as the London Observer's choice as the best film actress of 1967. Prior to the film version, Miss Knight did Dutchman on the stage in Los Angeles. She has starred off-Broadway in Roger O. Hirson's Journey to The Day and in Stanley Mann's Rooms. On Broadway she played Irina in the Actors Studio production of Chekov's The Three Sisters. Some of her other stage appearances include Romeo and Juliet at the Shakespeare Festival in Wilmington, Delaware, and the title role in Little Mary Sunshine in Los Angeles and at Philadelphia's Playhouse in the Park. Miss Knight has starred on all of the major television shows as well as playing Strindberg's "Miss Julie" in a Special for the Canadian Broadcasting Company and in a recent special of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Majesty for the british Broadcasting Company.
