Movie Life Magazine Photo Spread, July, 1953
On page 10 is a photo of Piper and Carlos Thompson seated at a table, talking:
the caption reads PIPER AND CARLOS...Before Yvonne De Carlo took off for Europe,
a wedding was predicted for her and Carlos Thompson. Soon after her departure, however,
Carlos became enamored with red-haired Piper Laurie. At first, two had only occasional
dates; now they're steadies. Pals say Piper's real gone about handsome guy. The title
of the main article on page 54 is Luncheon at Lauries, captioned "There's a
Backyard Banquet, with Plenty of Food and Fun, when Piper Laurie and Her Pals Get
Together." The first photo is of Piper and her mother who is mixing salad in
a large wooden bowl, with PL smiling over her shoulder- caption reads: 'Mother Jacobs
is becoming just as famous around Hollywood as her daughter, the terrific table she
sets being the reason! A visit to her home means delicious food any time of day.
When Piper invites her chums, it's sure to be extra-special.' The top photo on the
page is of two young men holding up lawn chairs- caption reads 'Careerwise, things
look good for these boys. After two years in service, Dick's getting off to a fine
start again in All I Desire. Palmer was in the Army before he landed UI contract.
He's also former disc jockey. His latest film is Column South.' Bottom picture
on the page shows same two men carrying a picnic table- caption reads: 'Gentlemen
of the party, Dick Long and Palmer Lee, set up a backyard dining room with furniture
brought from the garage. Both Piper's fellow UI players, Dick's a friend of many
years, knew her well before he left the studio for Army hitch.' On the top left of
the next page is a photo of PL and Lisa Gaye setting places on the picnic table-
caption reads: 'Starlet Lisa Gaye was Palmer's date. She's Debra Paget's younger
sister whose name was changed from Lezlie in process of grooming for UI film debut.
Like Deb, she's a home girl, and seldom steps out.' Right top photo is of PL and
Dick Long eating chicken- caption reads: 'M-M-M-mmm, it's fried chicken! Piper says
the family cook, Edna makes the best in the world, and Dick agrees. Her mom's wonderful
tossed green salad, potato chips, rolls, olives, pickles, tomatoes, coffee, milk,
choice of soft drinks completed the feast.' Bottom photo, full half page of PL on
left passing salad bowl to Lisa, with Dick standing in the middle looking on- caption
reads: 'Seconds all around! Having just returned from a tour, Piper enjoys home cookin'
too. During trip a little girl traveled alone to give her a gift. Piper insisted
on calling on her family. Turned out to be a 300-mile trip, but she made it!' The
next page is a full page photo of PL and Dick Long playfully boxing with PL wearing
heat pad cooking mitts- caption reads: 'The gal throws a sharp left, but she's better
in those clinches with Rock Hudson in The Golden Blade, sez Dick! Rumored
a romance, she and Rock are just friends. Lately, she's been dating Carlos Thompson,
li-i-kes him.' Next page, top left photo is of Dick playing the piano and PL, Lisa
and Palmer standing next to the piano and singing- caption reads: 'Piper tried to
keep up with Dick on her four-note trumpet, had to give up! She bought it in Memphis
while on tour for amusement on long train rides, admits she drove the press agent
batty with it. She managed to master two pieces- Taps, and Goodnight, Ladies.' Top
right photo shows the four of them standing around a parakeet cage looking at a baby
parakeet- caption reads: 'Baby parakeet in the latest addition to Piper's pets. She
had two birds, two dogs and some fish. Her mother hopes the collection will stop
there! Mrs. Jacobs helps daughter a lot by doing her shopping. She bought Hawaiian
matador pants Piper's wearing.'
Bottom left photo shows Dick and Piper poking
fingers through the kennel gate where two little dogs are standing on two legs against
the inside of the gate- caption reads: 'Though Sache and Squeaky were penned during
feed, they are not forgotten. Dick told Piper he was going to San Francisco to see
Mary Briggs. They've postponed their wedding, thinking it best to iron out all problems
before they marry.' Bottom right photo shows Dick and PL saying goodbye- caption
reads: 'Lots of good wishes went with goodbyes from Piper's pals. She was about to
set off on a three-week jaunt to Korea, her second, and was looking forward to it.
On first trip, she loved gagging it up in a clown act, a change of pace from romantic
roles.'
