how stars are born
Movie youngsters in Hollywood study for stardom
in a schoolhouse-on-lot
TODAY, with television banging at its doors, Hollywood searches more diligently
than ever for new faces- with talent. But young hopefuls still find it hard to be
"discovered." Even the chosen few sometimes fail if they don't have solid
dramatic training to buck fast, econonimical movie-making schedules.
At Universal-International,
these problems are met sensibly by a star-grooming program launched by production
chief William Goetz. A group of youngsters under contract get on-the-job dramatic
training. Fourteen hours a week, they attend group classes in acting, diction, gymnastics,
even horseback riding. Between times, coach Sophie Rosenstein gives them private
instruction. The school's credo: "Everybody gets a chance; the public will pick
out the stars."
