She's back in the saddle again
Horses fascinate Piper Laurie, like many a dainty young miss, a good deal more than the gentler arts of cooking or embroidery...There she can ride to ther heart's content, and pretend she's really a girl of the old west.
* Remember when you were only so high and your greatest joy was playing imagination
games? You know, "You be the cowboy and I'll be the sheriff and we'll ride through
town looking for the bad men." Well, Piper Laurie is, of course, much too grown
up to admit to still playing those wonderful daydream games of childhood. But she
is still young enough to enjoy a brief session, every so often in the never-never
land of little girlhood. That's why the permanent Western "town" UI has
set up on a back lot fascinates her. There are always plenty of horses available
for a canter through "town" and out into the surrounding hills-- and Piper
dearly loves to ride. And, as she rides along through the deserted streets of the
realistic Western town, she can pretend she is really a heroine of the old West.
Everything is there to help her play this innocent, relaxing game- so different from
the everyday world of modern Hollywood. There are wooden sidewalks and the weatherbeaten
houses, the stagecoaches, even a rocking chair out in front of the frontier-style
hotel available for rockin' and meditatin.' The men who work on the maintenance of
the "town" all know Piper by now and pitch in to give her a real, fine
time whenever her busy schedule allows her to visit them in their make-believe land.
It all adds up to a friendly, happy way to spend an afternoon. Many a young man who
has seen Piper tired and bored by an evening in a glamorous night club would be surprised
to see in what an unglamorous way their lovely date really enjoys herself. But Piper
doesn't invite any of them along to join her fun. This is her own, private way of
getting away from it all--a secret between Piper, the horses, and the friendly weaterbeaten
men who accept her as a buddy.
