My Diary (Part 2) by Margaret O'Brien, Copyright 1947, 1948

June 12: We got in New Orleans today. It is the prettiest town- it's real old fashined. Mama told me so much about it I couldn't wait to see it. The part I liked the best was the French part. They have lots of antique shops where you can buy pretty old things sometimes over a hundred years old. Mama bought me a black wig to wear when I play Vivien Leigh in Scarlett O'Hara and an old fashined white embroidered hat and a sweet little cameo pin. Then we went to a fancy French resterant where they had all french names. We couldn't figure out what it meant but just the same we ordered and when it came it tasted wonderful. Its late now so I have to go to bed. We are going sightseeing again tomorrow.

June 20: Well here we are home again. Even if I did have such a wonderful vacation I'm glad to come home. Nancy came over and had dinner with us. I had so much to tell her all about Bermuda, Havana, New York, and New Orleans. I brought back a Cuban doll for Nancy and she said she liked it very much. Maggie and Lad were so glad to see me they jumped all over me and cried and cried they were so happy. It's good to be home again and now I'm tired so goodnight.

June 21: Mama took Nancy and me to the beach today. We went swimming for the longest time and played sailboat in my new tire with the sail on it. Then we got hungry and ate hotdogs but we had to wait in line first. Next we saw a beauty contest and all of us guessed which one would win and we all missed. Then we had to go home and have one our dinner. After dinner we played dress up and Nancy wore the costume I brought back from Havana and I wore my black wig with the bangs on it that mama bought in New Orleans because I wanted to look like Viven Leigh in Cleopatra. Nancy is going to be a dress designer when she grows up. That will be nice because she can design all my clothes if I am an actress. Nancy is my best girl firend and she says I am hers.

June 23: I went to school today and I spent the whole day telling Miss Franz all about my trip. And Miss Franz said maybe now I will like geography better because then I can remember all the places I saw. Maybe I will. Everybody is having summer vacation now but I am going to start school pretty soon to make up for the time I was out on my vacation. I don't mind because we start a picture right away and if we didn't take our vacation when we did we wouldn't have had one at all. Now I will go to school and work during the summer but that's fun because I like to work and I won't even mind school now.

June 24: I was so happy to see all my friends today. I wanted to see Elizabeth Taylor especially and tell her about my trip but something happened. She's all grown up since we went away with high heels and lipstick and everything. I am so sad now I guess she won't want to play with me anymore. Mama said the reason is she is going to play her first grownup part in this picture. I wish I could grow up. Mama says I probably will but I'll just have to wait. Then we saw Judy Garland. And she showed us pictures of her little baby Liza. Then we went home. I didn't eat very much and now I've got to go to bed. I wish Elizabeth wasn't 15 now so she could still play with me.

July 4: We went to the beach to watch the fireworkds today. Mama wouldn't let me set off any because of Albert getting burned last year. I guess she's right because we saw a little girl get hurt even today. We saw the best fireworkds that the lifeguards shot off. It burst five times sometimes. Today is an important day because on the same day in 1776 everybody signed the paper that made our country a free country and called it the United States of America.

July 7: I got a present today from Claude Jarman- it was wrapped so nice in a box with ribbon. But I was so surprised to see what it was- it was a fish. And I got mad at him but he said we were supposed to eat it because its a trout and trout are good to eat. Then I went home and Mama cooked it for supper. It was the best fish I ever tasted. I guess Claude is a good fish catcher and tomorrow. I'm going to tell him I'm not mad at him anymore.

July 13: They had Roy Rogers at the Hitching Post today. And his horse Trigger did tricks. I think the Hitching Post is my favorite theater. I hope they never change from having three cowboy movies every time you go. I ate two bags of popcorn and fell asleep and Mama had to wake me up so we could go home. It would be nice if we had Roy Rogers at our studio- then maybe I would get to ride on Trigger. Then we ate our dinner and I played with Nancy for awhile. She is getting fat but outside of that she is my best friend. I wish I had a horse.

July 15: The benefit garden party was today at Mr. Jack Dempsey's house. I sold candy and so did his little girls and Shirley Temple too. She is the prettiest lady. I saw a movie of her when she was little and she hasn't changed much except she grew up. I wonder if I will change much when I grow up? I hope so. I sold the most candy so I got a prise. Then we watched Red Skelton entertain. He was very funny. Anne Blyth was there too and I got her autograph. She's only 17 years old and she's the best actress. Then I ate lunch and I sat between Jimmy Gleason and J. Carroll Naish. After that we watched the diving show in Mr. Dempseys swimming pool but we couldn't go in swimming. I had a very nice sunday and I'm glad we went because Mama said we helped a good cause.

July 19: We went for a ride into the valley when all of a sudden we saw a little circus. So I asked Mama if we could go see it and then we went in for a little while. We saw lots of lions and bears and a mule and horses and acrobats. Then I got a lizard and after we came home I gave my lizard away to my girl friend named Jane Anne but the Lizard died. Then my circus time ended.

August 2: A friend of ours got married named Meriem Lanova and I got to be flower girl. She use to take dancing lessons from Mama when she was a little girl only now she dances ballet with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. I wore a white net dress down to my ankles with four rows of white ribbon around the bottom and I carried a pink bouquet of carnations and another in my hair. Meriem wore a white dress it was fluffy chiffon with lace in between rows and rows of little pearl beads. And it had a train and a veil too. Then Meriem carried a bouquet of lillies of the valley. I was so nervous I thought I would get out of step or something walking down the isle and when I saw Meriem that only made it worse. She was as nervous as I was. Then they were married and we had cake and sandwiches. Her new name from now on is Mrs. John Bishoff Jr. My new dress is so pretty I hope I can go to another wedding before I grow out of it.

August 10: I went to the movies and saw a western cowboy picture. I wanted to stay and see it over again but Mama wanted to stay and see it over again but Mama said no. So we came home and I played cowgirl. I took Mamas clothesline and I tried to lassoo Maggie and Lad. And they didn't like it so very much they barked and barked and ran all over the yard. Just then Mama saw what was happening and I got a scolding. Mama was right though. I would hate to choke them. So then I practised on the chair. Until Bessie saw me and took the clothesline away before it got dirty. So I had my dinner and then I made doll clothes for awhile. Then I wrote some columns and now I've got to go to bed.

August 12: Mother took me to the premiere of "Red Stallion" at the Carthay Circle theater. It was the best one I ever went to. Lots of movie stars were there- I saw Jeanne Crain and Ronald Reagen and Bob Hope. They were all waiting in line to shake hands with the stars who were in the picture. At the front of one line was Lassie- she was sitting on a table and shaking hands with everybody too even though she wasn't in the picture. I could hardly wait for my turn. Linda Hope was in front of me with her daddy so we got to talk and she told me about her new bicycle. They had a whole animal fair in front of the theater too. Next we saw a bear drink soda pop out of a bottle. Then we went in to see the movie. It was about a little boy and his horse and dog in the wilderness. I liked it very much. Then I came home and I drew a picture of an old fashioned horse. Mama says Maggies disposition is changing only getting worse. Mama had to take her to the opening of the picture tonite because she didn't have enough time to bring her home. And when Mama got out of the taxi Maggie got away from her leash and all and ran after another dog and started to fight with it. Mama is so embarrased. All her friends were there and there were hundreds of people watching the opening. She was so mad at Maggie- I thought Maggie would have to stay outside tonite instead of under the stove but in the end she didn't. I guess Mama loves Maggie too much even if she was naughty.

August 20: Our beach club had a Laula Hawaiian party right on the beach. It started at two o'clock but we got there early. They had all kinds of funny food like two pigs cut in half. Some men put hot stones all over them and then buried them in the sand. We didn't think they would be very good but they said that's the way to cook them Hawaiian style. Everyone wore flowers around their necks and native girls danced hawaiian dances to the music. The orchestra sat right out on the beach too. All the girls had on grass skirts but my favortie was the girl who wore the white fringe skirt. She danced like a fairy. She is almost as good as my auntie except my Auntie Marissa is the best dancer in the whole world. I was so hungry but I wouldn't eat anything until the pigs were cooked. All the children played in the sand and the moon was shining on the water by that time it was beautiful. At eight o'clock the pigs were ready and when I tasted them I thought they were very good. I love to go to Laula parties and stay up late.

September 1: We did "Three Wise Fools tonite on the radio with Lionel Barrymore. I had four crying scenes and the longest part I ever saw. Afterwards we got a great big box of soap and went to dinner with Mr. Barrymore at the Brown Derby. I drew some pictures on the menu from off the walls. And I had spagetti and choclit malt. Mr. Barrymore said it made him sick to think of it but it was very good. I'm glad I'm not on my diet anymore. Then we went home. Lad was a bad dog again while we were away- he trampled on Mamas best gladiolas. And Mama is mad at him again. I guess he will never learn but I love him just the same. Then Mama told me a story. She tells the best stories. It was a nice day.

September 2: We went shopping today for our trip to Honolulu. Mama picked out the clothes I will wear when we go to dinner but I picked out my beach and play clothes. I got a white slip on sweater with buttons down the front and another sweater watermelon red color with long sleeves. Then I got a pair of yellow shorts and two pairs of peddle pushers. The best of all was a pair of strapless swede shoes. Mama didn't want me to have them at first. She still sys I should wait until I grow up some more but after all I'm ten years old now. I begged so hard mama finally said yes but I had to promise I won't ask for high heals until I'm 16 years old. Maybe Mama will forget. Anyway I think high heals are only fun to play in.

September 4: Today we left on the big boat to go to Honolulu. And all our friends waved goodbye to us, it was wonderful. We kept throwing paper streamers to the people down below with the orchestra playing and when the boat moved away the streamers broke and everybody started to cry. I thought I was going to be sad but instead there are lots of little girls on the boat just my age and we are firiends already. They have a lot of games on the boat and shuffleboard too- I don't know how to play that yet. Patsy Goodman gave me a present for going away- it is a beautiful box of colored shells to make jewelry with. I think I will make a necklace for Patsy first and then after that I will make something for Mama a bracelet maybe that would be nice. I am so excited.

September 5: We are going to be on the boat five days. It stopped in San Francisco and we got to see Barbara Newsum. Mama and I waited outside her school till she got out and the we ate a little dinner together. But we couldn't talk very long. Barbara doesn't have to wear braces anymore and she looks super. Then we had to rush away to catch our boat. The sailor boy showed me where Honolulu is and its way out in the middle of the ocean even more than a hundred miles. Then I played with one of my new friends. She is a Korean girl- named Sharon Song and she has long black hair in braids down to her knees. We finished Patsy's necklace. Sharon lives in Honolulu all the time and after we get there she promised to take Mama and me sight seeing. Mama says she never saw me eat so much and I better watch out or else I'll get fat again.

September 8: I played shuffleboard on the top deck this afternoon with Susie Soon. She is chinese and she got on in San Francisco but now she's going to live in Honolulu for one year. I won four games and Susie won only two. Mama said I should have let her win more but I don't think that's so very fair. Then Mama and I sat out on the deck in the big chairs and I wrote my column. I love to sit in the sun and smell the ocean breeses. Tonite we had dinner at the captains table. He is a nice man with white hair and he looks so nice in his white uniform. Then Mama said I have to go to bed. We played checkers for awhile and Mama forgot what time it was when all of a sudden she remembered so then I really will have to go to bed. We will be in Honolulu pretty soon.

September 10: I couldn't wait to get up this morning to see Honolulu. I even woke Mama up two hours too early. The sun wasn't even up yet but Mama wasn't angry. We got dressed and went on decka nd watched Honolulu getting closer and closer. There were thousands of people waiting on the shore to meet the people on the boat with lots of leis of flowers. The first person to put a lei around my neck was an American lady named Mable Thomas. She came out in a little boat to our big boatr. I asked her how she got on our boat and she said she climbed up the little rope ladder. That was pretty good because she was quite a fat lad and if she fell into the water she would have made quite a splash. She is very nice and she promised to show us all the interesting places on the Island. She knows them all because she has lived here 25 years. The first little girl to put a lei around my neck when I got off the oat was a pretty little Indian girl named Chandra Watermullo. Then lots of other people gave me leis too. I could hardly wait to get to the hotel to see how many I had- and I had 56. They are so pretty I don't know which one I like the best. One is made of gardenias, one of pink carnations, and then there are white carnations, yellow ginger flowers, crown flowers and lots of other flowers I never saw before. I guess they only grow in Honolulu. Mama and Uncle Marty have almost as many leis as I have. When Uncle Marty took off his leis we laughed and laughed because he was wearing a striped tie and it was so hot his tie melted and now he has striped ties all over his shirt.

September 11: Janie Cooper my girl friend on the boat is staying at our hotel too. We went swimming in the ocean and I got to wear my new yellow bathing suit with the flowers on it. It was real hot and the water felt so good we stayed in for almost three hours. But something awful happened when I was getting out I stepped on a piece of coral and cut my foot. I wasn't going to tell Mama because I was afraid she wouldn't let me go in the water tomorrow but Janie told on me. Mama took me to the nurse and she had to pull the coral out of my foot with tweexers. It hurt something awful and now I can't go swimming for two whole days. Then Mama and I went shopping and she bought me a new OZ book. I haven't read yet so now not going swimming won't be so bad.

September 12: Mama tried to tell me I shouldn't stay in the water so long but I didn't listen very well and now I am sunburned like a boiled lobster. I should have listened to Mama. We went in a speed boat to Coconut Island and it was such a pretty trip. We visited the caneries and saw how they canned pineapples. Then we went to the Armery and Colonel Robert Louis Stevenson pinned a medal on me and made me an honerary little colonel of the 298 Infantry Regiment of the National Guard. Next Lt. Colonel Henry Putnam gave me an orchid for my hair and a lei for my neck and a regimental pin so now I'm an army lady.

September 13: Today we went to a Hawaiian feast. Everybody had to sit crosslegged in the sand and I never saw so much food. They brought it out in big bowls and you take as much as you like. Then I found out the best recipe. Its called coconapple ice cream. Its made out of coconuts and pineapples mixed and then you serve it in pineapples cut in half. Mama says I can make some when I go home. They had dancing girls too and they all did the hula with grass skirts. Mama said I can take lessons starting tomorrow. And she is the same lady who taught Mama when she was here before.

September 14: I took my first hula lesson today- it was so much fun. Every dance is like a story. First the lady told me the story and then she did the dance. Then she showed me how to move my feet and arms so I could do it. The hardest part is trying not to be jerky but instead move gracefully. I thought I did awful but the lady said I was pretty good at it. She gave me the best present- a grass skirt to danced the hula in.

September 15: I learned how to paddleboard with the champion rider of the whole world. His name is Sargint Kohonomoko. We both stood up on his paddleboard at the same time and rode the waves all the way to shore. Mama was so worried even if he was the champeen. They have a water fountain in the lobby of the hotel only instead of water it has pineapple juice and you don't have to pay for it either. I only wish they had them at home. I am getting a good tan but Mama says I look awful I have so many freckles. Then Mama and I went shopping and we bought some little shoes that you wear so you won't cut your feet when you go swimming. The leader of the band where we ate has a dimond in his front tooth and he showed it to me. Then he sang a song about me. The words are Margaret O'Brien the Irish Hawaiian. I just love Honolulu.

September 16: Mama and I went over to see Pearl Harbor where the war started. It wasn't what I expected at all- its the prettiest place with a little bay with boats in it and an airport right near. We saw lots of sailors in their uniforms and marines too. Then we visited the army post and the colonel gave me a pin and that means I'm an honorary member of that post. Next we saw pictures of what Pearl Harbor looked like after the war started and I could hardly recognise it. Its all pretty now. I hope we don't have to have any more wars. Then we came home on the boat because we had to get ready for dinner. We are going to leave tomorrow. I wish we could stay forever.

September 17: Here we are on the airplane on our way home. I was very sad to leave Honolulu and all my new friends. They all came to say goodbye to us and we got even more leis than when we came. The Matsuos were there and Chandra too. I got a beautiful present. It is a long flowered dress with a train. Then everybody sang aloha- that means goodbye. I never heard such a sad song it made me cry. I hope we can come back to Honolulu again real soon.

September 19: I made doll clothes for Lucy. The newspaper had the best fashions. I cut them out to copy. Lucy has a new wardrobe almost- only her party dress is missing. And its all the latest fashion because I copied the dresses in Mamas fashion magazine. Tomorrow I think I will make her back to school clothes so Lucy will be ready to start school again with me.

September 20: We went shopping all day long for back to school clothes. We bought some pretty dresses mostly cotton for playing in and some sweaters. The man in the shoe store embarrased me. I asked for my size without straps and a little heel because I'm ten years old now and he kept bringing out Mary Janes. He said he thought I was only 7 years old or something. Imagine that. So we decided not to buy any shoes from him at all. But tomorrow I'm going to shoe Mama the shoes that Barbara's mother bought for her. She's only 9 1/2 and she wears swede strapless shoes and they aren't Mary Janes either. Then we ate dinner- lamb chops. I wasn't very hungry. I played Jennifer Jones in "Song of Bernadette" for awhile and now I have to go to bed.

September 21: Today Mama said I had to take all my leis out of the ice box so our food can go back in there again. They were beginning to turn brown anyway. I took them down to the ocean and threw them in the water and said aloha like they do in Honolulu and I hope they float all the way back to Hawaii.

September 22: Everybody told what they want to be when they grow up at school today and then we drew pictures. Butch laughed when I said what I was going to be but Mrs. Franz told him that I could divide my life and be all six of them if I wanted. Just so I won't forget this is what I want to be- a newspaper lady with my bran new typewriter and write stories all the time just like now. And a ballerina after that and be as beautiful as Cyd Charisse. A rich old fashined lady with a hundred dollars and wear old fashined dresses with high neck and ruffles and a cameo on a gold chain round my neck. And I have to be a dog trainer and a lady cowgirl. And then the last thing I want to be is a fire engine lady and go watch fires all the time.

September 25: I think I am getting fat. The director said everybody would think it was two different people in the picture if we do retakes now. I guess I ate too much on the trip. The doctor says I will have to lose seven pounds if I want to look like I did before we left. I wonder how I can. And my clothes don't fit me much anymore. Maybe I am just growing up- I hope so. I hate to diet. Mama says we will have a contest though to see who is the best dieter for three weeks and then the loser has to forfiet something. I think Mama will win. I saw Daine and I told her about our trip. I was happy to see her again and we both missed each other. Then we played jacks until I had to go to my lesson. Jimmy Craig said- how you've grown- right in front of everybody in Miss Burns office. I was embarassed so maybe its better if I diet. Then we came home. I played with Maggie and Lad. They got fat too while we went away. Bessie feeds them too much. And now I'm going to bed.

September 26: I thought it was a secret that Burt Lancaster is my favorite actor now but Lillian Burns must have found out. She ahd a great big autographed picture of him that he sent to me with my name on it. I wonder how she found out. I just can't wait to show it to Nancy tomorrow.

September 27: I had to go the dentist today. I almost didn't go either but Mama said we had to and I'm so glad. I saw Burt Lancaster there in person. He has the same dentist as we do. I think that's so wonderful. Mama didn't know who he was but I whispered in her ear. She thought I better thank him for his picture but I was so embarrassed I couldn't. He didn't recognise me either anyway. I hope I will get to see him again sometime when I won't be so embarrassed. Anyway now I won't mind going to the dentist anymore.

October 4: Today we went to the studio to get my clothes fitted for the "Big City." We are going to start on it next week. Then we went to Lillian Burtin office to go over script. Some of it is very funny and I got to sing a song in it. We tried it out once and I think I sang it all off tune. I hope I can sing it better next time. Butch Jenkins we found out is going to be in ti. I'm glad and even though he doesn't like girls very much I still like him. Then we went home but on the way we saw "Shepherd in the Valley." It was the best picture about two shepherd dogs. It was a mistry and I couldn't figure it out till the end. The good dog all the way through turns out to be the one who was killing all the sheep. So they had to shoot him. I don't think that was fair. I would have sent him away instead.

October 6: I was late for school today and I got scolded. Then Mother and I had lunch with Lana Turner and her little girl Cheryl. She is the sweetest little girl- she has blond hair just like her mommies and it comes down to her shoulders. I think she will grow up to look just like her mama. Miss Turner has her hair cut short now I noticed- I think I like it better when she had it down to her shoulder like Cheryls. We didn't have to work after lunch so we went visiting the sets. First we saw Jimmy Durante and he sent out and got ice cream for us as a surprise but we couldn't eat- we already had some for lunch. Then we went to visit Frank Sinatra- he was wearing a bandits suit and he sang a song for Cheryl and me about his little girl Nancy. Then we saw Gene Kelly and he was a pirate. Cheryl wanted to see him dance and he said he would if I would do the dance with him where I am the mouse just like in "Anchors Away." I almost forgot it I haven't done it since the President Birthday ball in Washington D.C. But we went in a corner and practiced for awhile and then we came back and did it for Cheryl and she liked it. Then it was time to go home. Cheryl didn't want to let go of my hand but Miss Turner promised to bring her again soon. I told her I would take care of Cheryl anytime she wanted. Its just like taking care of a pretty real live doll.

October 11: Lad had her picture painted today and I'm so proud of it. Mr. Robert Hildebrandt painted it and he only paints dogs- he's painted 4000 of them already. Lad didn't like it so very much though- she wouldn't stand still for him until he gave friends. I wonder if all dogs like to eat as much as Lad. The picture is so beautiful- its on a velvit canvas and I hung it right over my dresser so I can look at Laad when I go to bed.

October 14: Today was our first day on "Big City." I like first days the best because I see all my old friends again and meet the new ones too. They are going to have lots of boys and girls just my age in the picture so we will get to play a lot I guess. I met Lotte Lehman. She is a wonderful singer. and we met Bob Preston too he is going to be one of my fathers in it. Mr. Pasternech sent everybody flowers and I got some too and then he came down and shook hands with everybody and wished them good luck. I was very happy to work with Diane and Butch again. We played Mother May I but Butch wouldn't play. I guess he still doesn't like girls but not as much as before because he said he'd play if we would play what he wanted to play. Mr. Pasterneck said we are suppose to have a fight in the picture and I win even though Butch is bigger than me. That will be fun.

October 15: Well I have been crying and crying my eyes out but now I feel better. I forgot my lines on Jimmy Durante's radio show and there were millyons of people listening. And it wasn't my fault either. Unkle Jimmy is so funny and I got so interested listening to him when he was teasing me- and that wasn't in the script either- that when it came to my turn to talk I was so surprised I forgot what to say. I guess it didn't sound too bad because he whispered my lines in my ear and then I remembered. But thats the first time that ever happened to me. I thought Uncle Jimmy would be mad but he wasn't. We went to the Brown Derby afterwards and he bought Mama and me ice cream sodas. I hope I can do another show with him real soon so I can do better. Now I'm going to bed. I'm so tired- I guess worrying makes you tired. Goodnight.

October 17: When I went into my dressing room today at the studio something terrible happened. My poor old man doll that mama bought for me in Mexico was lying there on the floor with his head broken off. I cried and cried. The property man said he would glue it back on for me but just the same I wonder who could have done it. Someone said they saw Butch Jenkins playing in my dressing room. I don't thinkhe would play with dolls but just the same tomorrow I think I will play Sherlock Holmes detective and see if I can track down the criminal.

October 20: I got a present from George Murphy today. It was a box of bubble gum and Mama got worried. She always says I shouldn't chew gum and especially bubble gum so much and not in front of anybody. we didn't know what to do because we had to show Mr. Murphy that we liked his present. So I go one piece to chew in front of him. Then we came home and Mama hid the rest of the box but I saw where she hid it. I hope she changes her mind- I don't want all that gum to go to waste.

October 23: Bluebell came to me today as quite a surprise. I was in school with Diane Toien. Mrs. Daniels was teaching us on the set of "Big City" when who do you suppose walked in but a little black lamb with a big white ribbon round its neck. That was Bluebell. Then a man came in behind Bluebell named Dr. Booth- he told me that this baby lamb was given to me from all the sheep growers all over the world. I was so happy because in a little while I could take Bluebell home with me. After lunch then I went to stage 27 to take the pictures with my lamb and get his formula. Bluebell was in a big box and the man was feeding him with a bottle of milk with a nipple on it. He has to be fed like a baby for five months till he can eat grass. Then I took Bluebell home with me. He is now in the back yard playing with Lad and Maggie. I found out the other day that collies are really sheep dogs. Now I know that Lad can take care of Bluebell my little black lamb.

October 24: I went to school. We gotour examination papers back. I got B on my arithmetic but I got A on my composition. Then I watched Betty Garret sing and dance Okel Dokel Baby. I hope I can imitate her alright because I have to do it in the picture. I think it will be hard. She's so good. Maybe it will be fun though. Its so different from ballet- it's sort of Boogi woogi like.

October 30: I got my report card today and it wasn't what I expected at all. I guess I'm getting to be a good speller after all. And Mama was so surprised she said we would celbrate on Saturday. Then we had lunch in the commissary. Frank Sinatra came over to talk to us. He invited me to come play with his little girl some time and Mama said I could. He's very nice. Next we went to Lillian Burns to study more script. And we met Betty Garret she is going to be in the picture too. Miss Burns said she is married to Larry Parks who played Al Jolson on the screen. We found out we are going to sing the same song in the picture but she's a good singer. But she said she will help me with my singing. Then George Murphy and Danny Thomas came in to study their songs too. I guess everybody is going to sing in the picture- I can hardly wait.

October 31: Next to Christmas, Halloween is my favorite holiday. Mama took Sharon and Diane and me to the most elegant place for dinner. Sharon, Diane and I were all dressed alike we wore long old fashioned plaid tafeta dresses with bustles in the back and hats with feathers in them too. No one could tell us apart they thought we were all twins. After dinner we went trick or treating with big paper bags. Mama went and she waited in the shadows wile we went up and rang doorbells. Sharon was the bravest doorbell ringer. Everyone was very nice and gave us cookies only on cross lady didn't give us anything and said not to bother her. We wanted to play a trick on her but Mama said that wouldn't be so very nice. And one poor lady didn't have anything to give us so she gave us one of her cats. Mama said we better not keep her because Maggie and Lad might eat her up or something horrible so we played duck for apples and Sharon won first prise and the first prise was the kitty.

November 6: Auntie came home from New York today. She didn't recognise me. I grew so much. And she brought me a white silk scarf with balerinas on it to wear on my hair. I am so glad to see her.

November 7: Tonite we went to the Friend ship train. We went in Carmen Mirandas car and Florence Meyer from Philadelphia went with us. I never saw so many searchlights or so many people. Evreybody in Los Angeles must of been there. They had a big platform in the middle of the street for the show. I saw Virginia O'Brien and Kathryn Grayson sing and Red Skelton and Danny Thomas and Eddie Cantor made jokes. Then Mr. Drew Pearson and Governor Warren made speeches and I did too. Next Irving Berlin got up and asked everybody to sing God Bless America. Then the Friendship train came tooting by and there was Van Johnson and Judy Garland and lots of other stars standing on it and waving at everybody. All the people got on the train and went for a little ride down Hollywood Blvd.- all except me. Mama said I should go home because it was after my bed time. Mama said the train is going all over the country to get cans of food for the poor little children in Europe who are hungry. And every city will add another train. I hope by the time it gets to New York it has about a thousand trains. I am tired so I will go to sleep- good nite.

November 9: Today is Sunday. I read the funnies and then Auntie and I went to church. Afterwards we got to go to Thrifty's Drug Store for our lunch. I had the best banana milk shake and a hamburger too. Then we went to the Hitching Post and saw three movies only this time they didn't have the serial. I wonder what happened. When we got home Mama was worried about us we were gone so long.

November 10: I met Cardinal Spellman on the set today. Mr. Mayer forgot to tell me who he was bringing and I made a mistake and called him Father. I hope he didn't mind. Now I am so worried and so is Mama but not for me. She made the same mistake as I did.

November 11: Today is Armistice Day when teh first world war ended. Mama and I went out to the soldiers cemetary with some flowers to put on the graves. First we went to the new part where the soldiers from world war two are buried and put flowers on the graves. There were lots of other girls and boys there with their mommies. One little girl told us she came out visit her daddy's grave- he was killed in Okinawa. Mama and I didn't know any of the soldiers in the graves but we knelt down and said a prayer for all of them. Then we went over to the other side and did the same thing for the soldiers form world war one. There weren't so many people on that side and not so many graves either but it was very peaceful and a little bird flew on my shoulder and then away up in the sky. I told Mama that I wanted to visit the soldiers graves every Armistice Day.

November 15: Mama, Auntie and I went to Bob Sertes house for dinner tonight. Mama and Auntie sat at the big table with the other grownups but I got to sit at a little table with Bruce and Linda. Bruce goes to military school I found out. He looks so handsome in his uniform. And he said when his school has the dance they give sometimes maybe I would like to go. The next one will be at Christmas time. I said yes I would but now I am so worried. I will have to learn how to ballroom dance. I'm glad I didn't tell him that though. I guess Mama will teach me- I think she is the best dancer in the whole world. Then after dinner Bruce showed me his daddy's radio room. I never saw so many radios- Little ones and big ones. Bruce said sometimes they can even talk to a man in China. I had a very nice time and then we had to leave. I hope Bruce remembers to ask me to his military school dance. Mama says if he does I better not do what I did when I went to a dance when I was only 5- instead of the boys asking me to dance I asked them and mama was so embarrased.

November 16: Auntie let me play with some of her old dancing costumes the one I liked the best is a long spanish dress with pink frilly cloth and Auntie says it has thirty five yards of material in the skirt. It doesn't anymore though- we cut it all up to make lampshades for Uncle Marty. First we cut cardboard for the shade part and then we sewed Aunties skirt on it and pinched it together so it would be more fluffy. After that we tied a pretty bow on it and showed it to Uncle Marty. He didn't like it though- I guess men don't like frilly things. But now it looks very nice in Mama's room. We still have lots of auties dress left so I think I will make a dress for my doll.

November 22: Margaret Thomas had the best party- she had a lady magician there. And I never saw so many tricks. She took some pieces of paper and then she put 50 cents inside of one. Then she wrapped them all up and gave the bundle to me and when I opened it the 50 cents was gone. Next she put a round ring on a rope and held the rope with two hands so the ring wouldn't come off. Margaret tried to get the ring off but she couldn't. Then when the lady tried it with Margaret holding the rope it came right off. She had the smartest bunny I ever saw. It did all kinds of tricks. Then we had a spelling contest and I won second prise. It was the best magic set so now I think I will have to be a lady magician when I grow up only I have to get a bunny. I put my new magic set in the closet next to the box where I keep my jewls and valubles.

November 23: Auntie took me to visit Lassie out in the Valley. And I took Lad so she could see her daddy. She was so happy she cried and cried. But Lassie got mad at her once for not obeying her. I guess Lassie knows so many tricks she expects Lad to do them too. Jut the same they were so happy to see each other. Mr. Weatherwax took us to meet all his other dogs. I never saw so many in my life- he has forty and they all work in the movies. He even has a little kitty and a mule that work in the movies too. Then we had to go but before we left Mr. Weatherwax gave me two tickets to Lassies radio show. I can hardly wait to go see it.

November 27: I'm so full of Thanksgiving turkey I can hardly write. Mama cooked the best dinner and I got to help her. She let me set the table. It looked sort of funny though I couldn't find the white candles so I had to use our orange halloween ones. Mama is the best cook in the whole world- I hope someday I can cook like her. Goodnight.

November 28: Mama told me the best bedtime story about Mike an Irish war dog. He's even braver than Lassie. He was just a poor homeless little puppy that stowed away on a boat and came here all the way from Ireland to see if he could find someone to take care of him. And he didn't know there was a war. They put him in the army right away and he was very happy because he got to wear a dog tag just like all the soldier boys. He found a master too. Then one day while he was overseas and his master was busy fighting the war he saw his master get wounded. So Mike ran after him and dragged him all the way back to the doctor's. And after that he dicided to go capture the machine gun nest that shot his master. So then he got a medal and his master got well and they came home and lived happily ever after. I think I like Mama to tell me stories even better than listening to the radio.

November 30: Mama, Auntie and I went down to Olivera Street for dinner. We had red hot enchildas and chili and beans. They tasted so good. Its the prettiest street- it has cobblestones and a wishing well and lots of little Mexican stores. I thought we were in Mexico again. Mama said its the oldest street in Los Angeles and the first spanish people built it. So I pretended my great great grandfather was one of them and fought the indians and everything. Then we came home and I played Spanish lady. I put on mamas spanish shaul and some gold earings and a rose in my hair and the basket mexican hat mama bought for me. Now its my bed time.

December 1: I got mad at Diane today. Mama says I shouldn't have and I better go make up tomorrow. But just the same I didn't speak to her all day. I told Mama that Diane was trying extra hard to stay a half grade ahead of me after I've been trying all this time to catch up with her. I still think it would be nice if we were in the same grade. And I didn't play with Diane all day either. But I don't think I will do that tomorrow because I got lonesome too. Anyway Mama says I will just have to get along with Diane one grade ahead of me in school.

December 2: Mama and I stopped at the ten cent store to buy Diane a gift. I got her a little silver skate to wear and then I thold her I was sorry I got mad. She was very nice and now we are friends again. I guess Mama was right- it isn't nice to be jelous even if she is a half a grade higher than me.

December 3: Diane and I are going to make Christmas presents for our Mamas we decided. I started mine today- and when I get through it will be a whole set of six fancy water glasses and a fancy Bower pot too. And I finished one glass already. I took an old jelly glass and then I took some green and white crepe paper and cut it in little strips and twisted each one and wrapped them around the glass real tight. That is I only wrapped it half way up and I pasted it on so it would stay. There going to look so pretty. Diane's is going to red and white that will be nice. Mama had a headache tonight when we came home so I got to play nurse and take care of her. Now she is feeling better. Its time for bed so I better say my prayers and go to sleep. Goodnight.

December 6: My cousins Barbara, Carol, Billie and Denny and their mother and father came down from San Francisco today and we all went to the Notre Dame and U.S.C. football game. They wanted Notre Dame to win so I decided to be for Notre Dame too but I'm glad Uncle Johnny wasn't here because he went to U.S.C. Mama bought us all Crisanthamums to wear and we all yelled so loud that we could hardly talk afterwards. The most embarrasing thing happened. We found out we were sitting on the wrong side where you root for the other team. Anyway Notre Dame won. After the game we went to the most elegant restaurant to eat and we all got to stay up late.

December 8: We had to go to the studio early this morning and as we were driving away we saw a beautiful Cadillac car driving down the street. It would slow down in front of every house and the man in the car would throw a little bundle that looked like a newspaper on the front steps of each house. That didn't seem right to me but all of a sudden we saw who th eman was and it was a director at our studio. We waved to him and he yelled back that he couldn't stop now that he would esplain later. All the way to the studio I kept wondering if maybe he had lost his job and had to get a newspaper rout instead. I felt sad because he was one of the best directors at our studio. At lunch we finally found out. The man told us that he had always told his little boy that if he wanted to grow up and be a good business man he better start right now. So the little boy got a paper rout to make his spending money. Every morning he would get up early to deliver his papers on his bycicle and he never missed a day. His daddy was very proud of him until one day the little boy was sick and that was today and he couldn't get out of bed. He was very worried because he couldn't deliver his papers and that would be the first time he missed. His daddy finally decided to deliver them himself on his way to the studio. He asked me not to tell on him because he said if it ever got out he'd never hear the end of it- and I won't tell either.

December 11: Butch had to hit me in the face with a tomato today and then we were suppose to have a big fight afterwards. It was sort of hard because I was suppose to win and that made us feel like laughing- he's bigger than me. But just the same we didn't and the director got the scene in one take. And I'm glad he did- I don't think I would like it if Butch had to hit me with the tomato twice. It was a big squashy one too and it went all over my face and hair and even my dress and I had to have my hair washed and my dress changed afterwards.

December 12: I got to wear lipstick really in the picture today when I sang Okel Dokel Baby. And I was suppose to act like a glammer girl too. I never had so much fun in all my life. But after they took the scene Mama made me take it off.

December 13: I had to kiss Butch today. Thats the first time I ever kissed a boy. It was so embarrasing. Everybody was watching. I don't think Butch likt it so very much- he blushed so red- but Mama said so did I- so maybe he did.

December 15: We shot the Coney Island scene today. It was so much fun- I was suppose to go with George Murphy and Shoe Shoe Grady who is BettyGarret in the picture. And when we get back from Coney Island I am suppose to imitate Shoe Shoe and use all the slang that she did. And in my arms I carried two ice cream cones and three ballons and four cupie dolls that we were suppose to win. And I was suppose to smellof ten cent store perfume. Mama said the scene was very nice. I better forget all the slang right away.

December 18: I rode on Santa Claus sleigh down Hollywood Blvd with Auntie and Mama. It was wonderful. But there was so much traffic and people we almost were late and missed him. I told him that when I was 4 years old Mama and I watched the same thing and I cried and cried because I couldn't ride then. And this makes our second ride on Christmas with him. Nancy asked me if I still believed in Santa Claus and when I said yes, she said he wasn't realy real. I don't care if he is or he isn't- I like him just the same. And I didn't tell Santa on her. I think Hollywood Blvd at Christmas time is the prettiest street in the whole world. There are so many searchlights everywhere its just like in the daytime. and there are Christmas trees as far as you can see. When we stopped I told Santa what I wanted for Christmas and that is a doll with real hair. Then we said goodbye and drove home. I think next year I will wear an extra pair of socks and gloves on Santa's sleigh its so cold up there. We stopped and had a hot chocaolit and hamburger at a drive-in. Auntie was cold too. I told her about Nancy and she said if Nancy says that again I should say- prove it. I think I will. I can hardly wait till Christmas.

December 19: Today we had the last day of school party before Christmas. I was suppose to work but Mr. Taurog let men off for awhile so I could go over to the school house where the paper was. Everybody helped make the decorations and we put them on the tree. We each put in twenty five cents for refreshments and Miss MacDonald had the nicest sandwiches and Christmas cake and candies for us. Even Mr. Thomas form the bored of education came. The most exciting part of all was when we opened our presents. Everybody had to draw little pieces of paper with a name on it last week and that was the person we were suppose to buy a present for. I drew Dean Stockwell so I gave him the belt I bought for Butch Jenkins because I was working and couldn't go shopping. So I gess I will have to buy Butch another belt. Mary Jane Smith drew my name and she gave me a lovely box of bubble bath and bath powder. Then we played gaimes and had lots of fun. Even Miss MacDonald and Mr. Thomas played with us. Then the party was over and I went back to work on "Big City."

December 20: We finished the end of the picture today. I'm glad because now we will have time to get ready for Christmas. I have to hurry or else I won't finish Mamas glasses. Mama said I can pick out my own presents for everybody this year-that will be nice.

December 21: We went to buy our Christmas tree today. We got a big white one and it has pine cones on it. Mama says they are so expensive this year. And we got a reath to hang on our front door too. It has a silver bell on it that tinkles when you open the door and a red ribbon hanging down. The tree looks very nice in the room only we had to cut off part of the top so it would fit. Then we decorated it. I made strings of popcorn and we put the decorations from last year on it. The part I like best is putting on the little peices of tin foil. Afterwards we put the presents all around the tree and I hung up three stockings on the fireplace one for me, one for Maggie and one for Lad. I just can't wait for Christmas to come. I wonder what Santa will bring me?

December 22: I'm so tired- we went shopping all day. I bought a red sweater for Diane and a blue one for Nancy. Then we got the prettiest Alice in Wonderland doll for Cynthia. I bought a fancy pink new look petticoat for Auntie and shaving lotion for Uncle Johnny and a pen for Uncle Marty. It's a lucky thing Mama paid for them. I didn't even have enough money for Diane's sweater. The man at the store wanted to wrap them but instead Mama and I took the paper and we wrapped them ourselves- thats the most fun of all I think. Then I came to bed. I read Robin Hood for awhile- I never seem to get tired of reading it over and over again.

December 23: I was sick in bed with a cold and swollen eyes and the reddest nose. I wanted to get up only Mama said no I had to stay in bed all day. Thats what I get for not wearing my coat when Mama said I should. I don't like to stay in bed- even when I have to go to bed at night time I don't like it. I listened to the radio for awhile and then I drew some pictures. Then I tried to ask Mama if I couldn't get up for just a teeny little while. And she wouldn't change her mind. Gee Whiz I wish I didn't ever have to go to bed and never have to even sleep either.

December 24: I was so worried I would wake up with my cold again but instead I didn't and Mama let me get up. Mama cooked the best turkey dinner with cranberry sauce. While it was cooking we went over to do the radio show with Jimmy Durante. And I was so careful I didn't miss one line this time. Then we went home and Auntie had the table all set. I went in and wrapped Mamas presents- it has to be five glasses instead of six because I didn't have time to finish the last one. It was Mamas birthday too. I don't think thats so very fair to have your birthday on Christmas Eve. Then you only get half as many presents. Then we had dinner and Mama opened her presents. Mama was so happy with my present for her that she didn't even notice one glass was missing. I forgot to write Auntie and I got a special birthday cake for Mama. In the middle of dinner we turned out the lights and I sneaked into the kitchen and came out with Mamas birthday cake all lit up with candles. We sang Happy Birthday to Mama and after that we sang Silent Night and Jingle Bells. I can't wait for morning to come to see what Santa brought me and open all the presents under the tree.

CHRISTMAS DAY: This is Christmas Day. I woke Mama up real early- I was so excited I just couldn't wait any longer to see all my presents. Santa brought so many wonderful things this year. He brought a cradle with a baby doll in it and another basinet with twin dolls in it. Then I got a great big stuft monkey and a stuft dog and a pink quilted bathrobe with slippers to match. And the present in the big box was a two wheel bycicle that is just super. It has a basket on it too. Then I got a dolls wardrobe trunk and a new umbrella. Lionel Barrymore sent me two of the sweetest nightgowns. They were just like the ones I wore in "Meet Me in St. Louis." Auntie and Uncle Johnny came over and we all went to church together to see the little manger where Jesus was born. After church I showed them my presents and we tried out my new bycicle. Tonight we went to the best Christmas party at Alison's and Betty's. It was the most wonderful day of the whole year. I am going to say my prayers now and thank our dear Lord for being so nice to me.

December 26: The mailman came this morning and brought me some more Christmas packages. I got a gold bracelet with a little black record charm on it that is gold on the other side and it says to Margaret love Frank Sinatra. Then I got a beautiful little book about God from Katherine Hepburn and a big pink stuft lamb from Danny Thomas and a gold bracelet with a gold ballerina on it from Mr. Mayer. It was almost like Christmas all over again. I'm glad the mailman came late. Then Mama and I went over to Mr. Mayers house for lunch and Susan Dankers was there too. After lunch Mr. Mayer took us all out to his ranch in his station wagon to see his horses. On the way home we passed a Merry Go Round and Mr. Mayer stopped the car so Susan and I could have three rides on it. It was a lovely day.

December 27: Today I was given a beautiful bird. She is quite big and she can talk. She sits on your finger and you take her out side and she won't fly away. My bird is gray and yellow. She has red cheeks and the feathers on her head stand up and look like a crown. I named her Rosy on account of her cheeks. The lady who gave me Rosy told us that she wouldn't bite. Uncle Marty put Rosy on his finger right away and she wasn't very tame. She took a big nip out of Uncle Marty's finger. Rosy won't do that anymore because Mama is going to teach her not to. I have so many pets now- there is Lad and Maggie my dogs, and Brownie and Whitie my mice only they are still over at Nancy's because Mama doesn't want them in the house, and my turtle John Seban and my two gold fish, and Bluebell my black lamb, and my new bird Rosy. I hope she will be very happy in her new home.

December 31: Mama thought it would be nice if I made some resilutions for next year so this is what I decided. My resilutions for the new year are- I'm not going to be naughty anymore except when I can't help it. And I'm going to put my toys away at night. I'm going to try and mind my manners and do everything Mama says. And I'm not going to fib or even tell a little white lie except when I absolutely have to. And I'm going to remember to stand up straight. The only thing I can't do is learn how to like milk but I am going to try. I hope I remember what my resilutions are. Today is the end of the old year and its the end of my diary too. Tomorrow I'm going to get a new one and start the new year. I wonder what thair is in store for me.
