Touchstone- Ransom Cast Interview, 1996
Lily Taylor- Interview, 1996
Q: Maris is one of the kidnappers?
A: Yeah. She's one of the kidnappers.
She's Jimmy's girlfriend. And she's like a working-class girl from the Bronx and
doesn't really have any big plans for herself. So, this idea seemed smart to her,
seems like there's some answers in it..
Q: So there is a plan. I mean, and the plan seems pretty steady?
A:
Yeah, yeah. And there's like back-up plans. They've got this planned out.
Q: The other kidnappers-- these are people that you, Maris, knows?
A:
Guys that my boyfriend brought in. That I don't really think are doin' a great job.
Q: So, when the kidnapping goes down, what's the general response of the city?
A:
It's a big deal, because [Mullen is] such an important guy. You know, and so it's
like in all of the papers and it's like front-page news. It would be like Trump's
kid getting kidnapped, or someone like that.
Q: Does Maris have a change of heart at all? What's she think of this kid?
A:
Well, these little things start to go awry, because the whole general premise is
criminal. You're gonna get caught at some point. And then just paranoia starts and
just everything. Just like a domino effect, just starts to crash.
Q: So, she's in it for the money, or is this like a personal-- not a vendetta.
I mean, where''s she coming from?
A: I think she's in it for the money, but
I think also for that sense of purpose, because she's sort of directionless. This
sort of gives her-- not self-importance, but maybe some esteem points, you know?
Q: How much power or control does the boyfriend have over Maris? Is that a
pretty big influence in her life?
A: Yeah, it is. If you look at that relationship,
it seems pretty stereotypical. Older guy, younger girl, and I kinda wanna show other
sides to that, too, that there's women that are in those relationships that also
have some dignity and have some strength and all that stuff. And they're not just
these vapid vessels, you know.
Q: You haven't worked with Ron before? How's that been?
A: Great, great.
He's great. He really understands actors. He digs them. He knows how to speak to
them. He respects them, and that makes it enjoyable and worth it. And you feel like
you're being respected. That's so important.
Q: And Gary, I know his background is theater. You've got a long, illustrious
theater background too. Does that help you two as actors?
A: We're also both
from Chicago. I think all those things just sort of-- in an unspoken way-- help us,
you know. Yeah.
Q: He founded Steppenwolf. Didn't you start at the theater
A: Yeah,
right. Here, in New York. Just a little one. It's not like "Steppenwolf: and
all. We don't even have our own theater. But it's okay (laughs)
Q: What about the difference from your standpoint of working on independent
felms?
A: It's completely different. On multi-levels. In fact, I was telling
Ron how it was kind of different. They have a lot of film stock. I usually work on
films that don't. You know, he can take 15 takes, I can usually take three. I mean,
things like that. Very simple things. Craft service is a very nice thing here. The
meals are catered; usually we have to order in food or bring our own sandwiches.
So, there's just a lot of, lot of differences.
Q: In regards to this film and this story, genre-wise, how would you define
this.
A: Probably a thriller.
Q: In what sense? From the plot standpoint, story-wise?
A: Yeah, also
the way he's shooting it, too, though. There's a level of suspense because there's
people with these big things going on that aren't coming to a close through the course
of the movie. And so, everyone's got these high emotional things, and there's this
kid-- so, it's got like those elements of just like high drams, yeah.
Q: Now, you say, lot of twists in it. I know I'm not supposed to give them
all away but...
A: Exactllyl. See, yeah, exactly. We can't give things away.
That's a thriller thing. (laughs)
Q: What attracted you to this script?
A: Ron. And Gary. I knew that
most of my stuff would be with Gary. Those were the two reasons, really. And shooting
in New York is always nice. Yeah.
