Trek's new FHM-friendly babe, Jolene Blalock, talks to Ed Gross
Anyone who still misses the Kirk-Spock-McCoy dynamic of the original Star Trek
may have their prayers answered with Enterprise, as a new triumverate
is being formed, the focal point of which is Jolene Blalock's Vulcan first officer,
T'Pol. "Playing a female Vulcan has a great advantage, because of the contrast
to Scott Bakula's presence as captain, his manly strength, his leadership; because
it's a testosterone-driven team, the femininity of the Vulcan officer is actually
to our advantage...or to my advantage," muses Blalock. "It's nothing that
you have to push. It just is. And so it's easy to embody that and it's a great contrast.
There's a power in femininity that I am still discovering. It's slight, but it's
beautiful. T'Pol is feline in her movements. She's diplomatic with her words. And
she's dry. So in contraxdt to all the emotions, it works well."
Anyone fearing
that Blalock comes to Enterprise a complete Trek neophyte can put away
their concerns. She's a major fan of the original series. "I grew up on it,"
she enthuses. "My favorite was Spock, so it's strange for me to play this role.
I'd sit there with my dad and brother just watching the show, watching the relationship
between Captain Kirk, Bones and Spock. My favourite relationship was between Bones
and Spock, because it was just like this love-hate affair. But overall there was
such utter loyalty between all three of them. I love the way they worked together,
the way Bones would be like, 'You green-blooded fool!' Somewhere in The Next Generation
I got lost, but that's the advantage we have being a prequel. For all the the
viewers who got lost along the way, this is the beginning. You can get right back
on and not miss a beat." SFX
