Carol Kane, 23, made her acting debut at the age of 7 playing a Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz in hometown Cleveland. Her thespian credentials have become more impressive since then. Her appearance in Hester Street- a film about immigrant Jews on the Lower East Side during the 1890's- is drawing praise from both critics and audiences. Hester Street is not her first film (she appeared in The Last Deatil, Wedding in White and Dog Day Afternoon). Carol believes landing the role of Art Garfunkel's girlfriend in Carnal Knowledge was "the turning point in my career. It was the first time I was accepted by professionals in my field as an equal. I was respected and made to feel valuable." Rarely without a job, she works with Al Pacino's experimental theater group (they did Arturo Ui in Boston) and is a charter member of The Company, a group of seven women working in the arts in New York. Her next film, Harry and Walter Go tto New York with Michael Caine and James Caan- also set in the 1890's- will open this spring. The role she would most like to play is that of Bette Davis in a biographical film.
