We Hail a New Star- Carol Kane
She's an original, in looks, her almost albino-white skin and tangled dark blond
hair emphasize the huge green-blue eyes in the delicate face, in acting, she's assured
of her skill since she was Oscar-nominated for "Best Actress" in Hester
Street; in person, she's overly shy and unsure.
A cruel critic termed her
"ugly ...an albino witch". That hurt. "I know I shouldn't pay any
attention to anything so callous and cruel. But I am a woman (she's 24). Actresses
shouldn't be judged by their appearance but by their talen." She has plenty
of that. She's devoted her life to learning her craft."
"I started
training when I was 7 in my home town, Cleveland. I joined the Children's Theatre.
I wanted to move in and live there. It was my life and has been ever since."
She is amused at being called a "discovery" in Hester Street. She
says softly. "I have years of stage work behind me in everything from Shakespeare
to Ring Around the Bathtub, and I've made a half dozen movies (among them,
Carnal Knowledge, Desperate Characters, The Last Detail, Dog Day Afternoon.)
I'm Jewish, but I had to be coached in Yiddish for the role, and It was a wonderful
experience researching how life was back in the ghetto in 1896." Her parents
were divorced when Carol was 13, "But I am a very family oriented person."
She is apologetic about not being better "copy" for interviews. "There
is so little in my private life for me to talk about or that I will talk about. My
work has consumed me. Perhaps a little later there will be time for- other things."
