Young Carol Kane, recently Oscar-nominated for her role in Hester Street, didn't know whether to laugh or to cry when she couldn't get a drink at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Carol was staying at the hotel and dropped into its world-famous Polo Lounge for an interview. When Carol ordered a drink, the waiter asked to see her I.D. The 23-year-old actress doesn't drive so didn't have a valid driver's license- and the waiter wouldn't accept any other means of identification. So what did Carol do? She went "thirsy"...until her mother back in New York sent the hotel a copy of Carol's birth certificate!
