Robert of Wadhurst was an iron master, and worked the forges of Wadhurst and Rowfant. Being inconsiderate enough to name his son after himself although his son is known as Robert of Worth. The Whitfield name is of Boernician origin, first appearing in records in Northumberland.
"[(40241) Agnes Gyles] was 'sole heir of (80482) John Giles of Biddenden in Kent. . . She seems to have been of an armorial family and thus brought arms to be quartered with the Whitfield arms, as was done in the heraldic monuments of son John's descendants.'"

"Note: (40248) Richard was taxed £90 sterling at the time of King Henry VIII's subsidy roll. This was a very substantial amount and indicates a man of wealth.
"Richard's will was dated 21 Jun 1557 and was proved on 24 Sep 1557. He mentioned his wife, (40249) Elizabeth, each of his living children, his brother John, his cousin Walter Hendley (a possible clue to his mother's maiden name.)
"The will further charges his son, (20124) Thomas, "with the bringing up of my said daughters & I give ...him one of my silver goblets."
"For 16 years Thomas was to deliver to
Elizabeth, his mother, "20 loads of good wood redy made." After giving
specific items to certain individuals, Richard left "The residue of my goods
to Thomas my son, whom I make Executor."
"In another section, Richard... said
"The residue of my household stuff (after my wife has taken her choice) to be
divided between my said wife & Thomas my son, reserving to the latter all the
hanging now in my principal tent (tentament?) wherein I now dwell."
"Richard wrote his will in June 1557 and desired that he be buried in the parish Church of Cranebroke, in St. Thomas's Chancel, "beside my father."
"(40249vi) William Sheafe sympathyzed with the Puritans and fell into disfavor with the Bishop of Rochester. He was arrested and sentenced to expulsion from Cranbrook. At this time Richard Fletcher came from Rye to caution the people against ideas of reformation, but his sermon "did not calm the troubled spirits and a fierce contention followed, whereupon William Sheafe, one of the Church wardens, met the noisy disclaimers in a true John Bull-like manner with his feet firmly set and his head erect, and uttered these decided words "We WILL have Mr. Stroud to preach to us." (Satterthwaith)
"Elizabeth's will was reprinted in NEHGS Register Oct. 1983, p. 291. It was written 7 Oct 1564 and proved 26 Nov 1654. She refers to her brother John "Androw" whose identity was also established through the will of their father, Gyles Andrews. Elizabeth's will mentions linens, silver, brass and pewter items, suggesting a family of wealth.
