"CURTIS, ...(9729vi[1]) JOHN, Stratford 1650-85. Trumbull, I. 105, says he came from Roxbury; and he had (9729vi_a) John, b. Oct. 1642. But all of it seems erron. He was really s. of the wid. C.; had, says the preposter. tradit. d. Elizabeth old eno. to m. (4865[1]i) John, the eldest s. of (4864) Gov. Thomas Welles, bear. to him sev. ch. and, next, m. 19 Mar. 1663, (4865[1]i[1][2]) John Wilcockson.
"Almost every word of Trumbull, and of Cothren, borro. from T. in relat. to the Roxbury deriv. of John, and William, is wrong; and must have been a tradit. of the mid. of the eighteenth century. Yet a true John of S. by w. (9729vi) Elizabeth wh. d. as Cothren tells, 1682, beside that John of 1642, had (9729vi_b) Israel, Apr. 1644; (9729vi_c) Elizabeth May 1647 (wh. by the tradit. bec. w. of John Welles, eldest s. of the Gov. bore him one s. in 1648, the yr. aft. her own b[irth!] and tw. 1651); (9729vi_d) Thomas, Jan. 1649; (9729vi_e) Joseph, Nov. 1650; (9729vi_f) Benjamin, Sept. 1652; and [[vol. 1, p. 486]] (9729vi_g) Hannah, Feb. 1654 or 5.
"None of this must be reject. but perhaps when Cothren add, that he d. 6 Dec. 1707, aged 96 yr. and that his wid. (9729vi[1][2]) Margaret d. 1714, acquiesc. of our judgm. would not be so easy."
