"WHITING, (2436) WILLIAM, Hartford 1636, a wealthy merch. who had been engag. in a patent for lds. at Swamscot with Lord Say and Lord Brook, and had w. (4877) Susanna, s. (4877ii) William and perhaps (2438) John bef. [[vol. 4, p. 522]] leav. Eng. but possib. came over in 1633 with their agent or gov. (9753i[1]) Thomas Wiggin, whose (9753i) w. I think was his sis. as in his will he gives to her and ea. of her ch. decent legacies.

Indeed we kn. not from what part of Mass. he went, but prob. from Cambridge, since other promin. persons rem. thence that yr. and he in 1637 was one of the first ho. of reps. in 1641 an Assist. and treasr. of the Col. from 1643 to his d. in 1647, when he was call. major. Yet he was mak. voyages oft. certain. in anticipat. of one, made his will 20 Mar. 1643 (in wh. he calls his s. [4877ii] William less than 21 yrs. of age, and so, when draw. codic. 2 Apr. 1646), but it may have been only to the Delaware riv. where he maintain, trad.-ho. as also as Westfield, addit. to that will was declar. 24 July 1647, soon after wh. he d. for his wid. had admin. 2 Sept. foll.

We kn. not dates of b. of any one of the five ch. nam. in that will, the two bef. ment. and (4877iv) Samuel, of wh. however we never hear more, (4877i) Sarah, who m. first, (4877i[1]) Jacob Mygatt, near the end of 1654, and in 1683, (4877i[2]) John King, or (4877v) Mary, who m. 3 Aug. 1664, (4877vii) Rev. Nathaniel Collins of Middletown; but of (4877vi) Joseph, ment. in the first codic. we learn from Goodwin, that he was b. 2 Oct. 1645; and ano. s. was b. posthum. as we learn from the order of Ct. in Trumbull, Col. Rec. I. 495, but of him no more is told. His wid. m. 1650, (5029viii) Samuel Fitch of H. and next m. (4877[3]) Alexander Bryan of Milford, but d. bef. him, at the ho. of her d. Collins, and was bur. at Middletown, 8 July 1673."

He m. 1678, (4877[3][2]) Elizabeth wid. of Richard Hollingworth, d. of Michael Powell of Boston, wh. d. 1698, had Elizabeth b. 1679; and Joseph, 1684. -- James Savage, op. cit.

"BRYAN, (4877[3]) ALEXANDER, Milford 1639, a man of influence in the Col. of New Haven, and after union with Conn. Assist. 1668-73. Ann, prob. his w. d. there 20 Feb. 1661, and he m. the wid. of (5029viii) Samuel Fitch, the [[vol. 1, p. 282]] sch.master of Hartford, and d. betw. 20 July and 6 Nov. 1679, at gr. age. He had Richard, and other ch. we infer, for his will names, beside that s. only gr.ch and gr. gr.ch. sprung, indeed, from him; yet he prob. had ds. Susanna, wh. d. at Middletown 1670, and Joanna, wh. m. 9 Apr. 1652, Owen Morgan, unless one or both were wid. of other s. wh. had d. bef. the testat. He names gr.ch. (2439i[1]) Alexander, and his s. Alexander; gr. gr.ch. John, and Mary Maltby; gr.ch. (2439iv[1]) Samuel B.; gr.ch. Sarah, wh. bec. w. of Samuel Fitch, s. of his own w.; gr.ch. Hannah Harriman, and her three ch.; and neph. Thomas Oviatt."
    -- James Savage, op. cit.

Savage names (4876) William's wife, which he came to America with, as "Susanna"; yet Wm's widow, who married Saml. Fitch, he called "Mary". Barbour's Collection mentions Mary, but not Susanna

"In his will, William Whiting left a decent legacy to the widow of Thomas Wiggin and her children, leading genealogists to assume Thomas Wiggin was a brother of his wife."

Some websites have (4877) Susanna as the sister of Gov. Thomas Wiggin. Others have Thomas's wife Catherine as (4876) William's sister. Neither hypothesis seems to be backed up with evidence, other than the fact that William left a bequest to Catherine and her children.

"In 1646 "a plot was laid by Squasson, Sachem of the Naticks, to kill Governors Haynes and Hopkins and (4876) Mr. Whiting, on account of the just and faithful protection which these gentlemen had afforded to (4618?) Uncas. The plot was made known by a friendly Indian and the danger averted."

Charles Whiting, Hide, Leather & Oil dealers, is listed in the 1828 Hartford City Directory. Charles B. Whiting (1828-AFT 1890), President of Hartford's Aetna Insurance agency, was not in this family but rather in the Lynn, MA line.

The following are Census data for Charles Whiting of Hartford (incl. age brackets of household members):

1820: (M<10)(M18-26)(M26-45)(F10-16)(2F26-45)
1830: (M10-15)(M40-50)(var. F)
1840: (M5-10)(M20-30)(M40-50)(var. F)

The above indicates a Charles Whiting, b. 1790/94 head of household living continually in Hartford from ABT ages 28-48. Family Search shows a Charles b. 1792, no parents given; and a Charles W c. 25 Aug. 1765 W. Hartford ←Wm←(4877vi_a) Col. Jn←(4877vi) Jos←(4876) Maj. Wm, who may have been the father. There seems to be no other good candidate on record for #2A69R. Nothing can be inferred from the DNA evidence to date, about (4876) William Whiting's ancestors.

"RUSSELL, (9757iii[1]) JOHN, Cambridge, freem. 3 Ma. 1636, town clk. in 1645, [[vol. 3, p. 591]] constable in 1648, brought, no doubt, s. John, b. a 1626, H. C. 1645, rem. soon aft. to Wethersfield, where had raged a very unpleasant quarrel betw. Rev. Henry Smith and a part of his people, end. in 1648 by his death. He next yr. m. "Hinman calls him a rep. 1646-8, but tho. he says nothing else of him, p. 70, I suppose that is wrong. In neither of those yrs. does Trumbulls Col. Rec. so honor him, indeed he was not made freem. bef. 1655, nor was he ever so chose. If my conjecture would benefit the eye of a reader of those rec. he might see the name that mislet H. to be John Bissel, sometimes Byssel, wh. was more than half the time that R. lib. in Conn. one of the reps."
