It is said, on what ground I kn. not, that he was from Scotland; but to me it seems much more likely, that he was from Sherborne in N. part of Co. Dorset. Ten other ch. he had, by his first w. (4821) Margaret Fryer, beside (4821x) Seeth, bapt. 25 Dec. 1636 (wh. m. I believe, the sec. (4823iv) Joseph Grafton); as, (4821i) Thomas, (4828) Richard, (4938) George, John, (4821vii) Samuel, (4821iv) Joseph, (4821vi) Sarah, (4821ix) Elizabeth Bethia, and (4821viii) Miriam, for some of wh. the prob. is stronger than for others.
"Only six s. with three ds. are nam. in his will of 7 Dec. 1668. Sarah was w. of (4821vi[1]) Benjamin Balch, it is thot. and Miriam of a (4821viii[1]) Hill; and Margaret, wh. was rec. of the ch. 1689, may have been his w. He had sec. w. He had s. John, wh. a. 9 Oct. 1686, perhaps few days old; and his w. Elizabeth d. 18 of the same. The Salem rec. also certif. that by w. Elizabeth he had Elizabeth b. 13 May 1688; where we can see that an error of date is giv. unless he had sec. w. of the same name as the first. He went home early in 1642, back next yr. and went again, in 1644, on business, but came back next yr.
The date of his d. is not found, nor that of his w. tho. we see proof of his req. to the Gen. Ct. Sept. 1653 for his 600 acres to be laid out, and of her liv. 4 Aug. 1656, when she gave to (4821iv) Capt. Joseph Gardner dowry on his m. with her d. and the same shows that her h. Emanuel was d. From New England History and Genealogical Register, vol. xxv., pp. 48, 49, we learn that "(4820) Thomas Gardiner, the first of the Salem stock, came over in 1624 from Dorsetshire, England, near which the name had flourished for more than three centuries, and settled under the auspices of the Dorchester Company and Rev. John White, with thirteen others at Gloucester, Cape Ann, upon the grant of Lord Sheffield to Robert Cushman and Edward Winslow, made in January of that year.

Some refer to (4822) Thomas as "Governor". I don't know what he was Governor of. Some show (4823i) Thomas m. to Lucy Smith (d. 4 Nov. 1687), and ancestor of Presidents John & John Quincy Adams. James Savage, however, indicated that this was a different Thos. Jr. of Roxbury, s/o Thos. (d. 1638) & May (d. 1658) Gardner of the same place.
