DISCLAIMER:
The following family's position on the family tree is conjectural and unverified. Data for individuals ancestral to this person were derived primarily from the internet.

TENTH GENERATION

624. Roger Stevens

Elizabeth Stevens Stuart, "Our Stevens Story - On The Move," Private Printing, Osgoode, Ontario, Canada, 1991, pp 1-2. ISBN 1-895638-00-3. Others list (624) Roger as "Simeon Stevens" and/or show his wife as "Hannah Roswell", but I do not hold to the latter opinion.

Roger was b. ABT 1700 in Wales, and had been confined to the infamous New Gate Prison before being transported to Maryland on board the "Alexander" on 4 July 1723 as an indentured servant. He became a hatter. This line has the following problems:

1. Nobody has offered an explanation of how Roger of the "Alexander" ever got from Maryland to New York, and

2. 625ii) Benjamin Stevens named one of his sons "Simeon".

"A comment beside (Simeon's) Pension Granted reads, "This is one of the Stevens who was stated by AA Austin to have been a Tory." (S22545).

"(Benjamin & Hopestill had 10 known children, six of whom came to Canada as well as a daughter of another son. Of the 10 children that came with Roger, some were married with families. There is a picture of Benjamin 3rd in the History of Pittsford. He bought the farm & mill site confiscated when nephew Roger joined the Tories...

"While on active duty [(625ii) Benjamin Jr.] was captured, with three others [one was cousin (313ii) Ephraim Stevens] in a boat on Lake Champlain, near Split Rock, in May 1779. Being pursed by Tories and Indians from the shore and one man, Jonathan Rowley, being killed by a shot from the pursuers, they surrendered. Stevens was then seventeen years old and resided in Rutland Co. The prisoners were taken to Chamblee, thrust into a small prison, ironed together and fed for 9 days on no other food but dry peas uncooked. From thence they were taken to Quebec where Mr. Stevens spent three New Years Days in one room. Twice they made their escape but were recaptured. Finally in 1782 he was exchanged at Whitehall [, London, England]."

"...I have a number of resources that show (625iii) Benjamin's father is certainly Simeon. There still remains a question about Benjamin's mother -- it is either Hannah Roswell or Mercy Cotts. Simeon was married to both, and this mystery could easily be answered if we knew the exact birth year of Benjamin. Nonetheless, at this time, it is irrelevant.

"Second, the only information I have ever found linking a Roger Stevens to Benjamin was that they were brothers...

"Simeon Stephens/ Stevens was probably born at Plainfield, Connecticut, though no record of his birth has been found. The Stonington records give the marriage of Simeon Stephens and Mercy Cotts/ Coates, both of Stonington, November 3, 1737, by Theophilus Baldwin, Justice."

Stevens -- The history of this ancient Gloucestershire family traces its ancestry as a family of Norman origin

I favor the Welsh line for (312) Roger and Simeon's line for Roger(313ii) Benjamin, because the names of Benjamin's children match those in the latter clan, but do not match the names of Roger's children at all. In addition, Mercy Cottes would have been very young (and unmarried) at the time of Roger's birth; and there doesn't seem to be any evidence to support the fact that Simeon was ever married to a Hannah Roswell.
