THIRTEENTH GENERATION

4632. Roger Eastman

"EASTMAN, ...(4632) ROGER, Salisbury, an orig. propr. ancest. it is believ. of all of the name in our land, d. 16 Dec. 1694, aet. 83; and his wid. (4633) Sarah d. 11 Mar. 1698. They had (4633i) John, b. 9 Mar. or Apr. 1640; (4633ii) Nathaniel, 18 May 1643; (2316) Philip, 20 Dec. 1644; (4633iv) Thomas, 11 Nov. 1646; (4633v) Timothy, 29 Nov. 1648; (4633vi) Joseph, 8 Jan. 1651; (4633vii) Benjamin, 12 Feb. 1653; (4633viii) Sarah, 25 Sept. 1655; (4633ix) Samuel, 20 Nov. 1657; and (4633x) Ruth, 22 Mar. or Apr. 1662. Sarah m. 13 June 1678, (4633viii[1]) Joseph French jr. and next, 4 Aug. 1684, (4633viii[2]) Solomon Shepherd, by both had ch. and d. a wid. of gr. age 1 Dec. 1748. That he came from Southampton 1638, on board the "Confidence", in comp. with many wh. sat down at Salisbury, and neighb. towns, as presum. from a paper supplied by Henry Stephens of London, in Geneal. Reg. II. 108-10, after some correct. of errors found by H. G. Somerby, giv. in Geneal. Reg. V. 440, would be rec. as prob. in spite of the name being in the latter chang. to Robert, and the other circumst. of his being call. serv. 15 yrs. sold, for the numeral should be 25, and the designat. may well seem only a deception to get clear from the orders in counc. to embarrass emigrat."

-- James Savage, op. cit.

4635. Helen/ Elener unknown (prob. not Eleanor Morse)(see NOTES)

"There is no real proof to the parentage of (4634) Thomas and (9269vii) Robert. [It was certainly NOT] William and Emily (Nye) Barnard of Yorkshire Co., England. One of the ladies doing Barnard research says she had research done on the Wiltshire Barnards, but there was no way to tie them into the young men who emigrated to the colonies. She says a stronger case is made that the parents were (9268) Thomas and (9269) Ann (Cooke) Barnard of Suffolk Co., England. Patricia Burns has done extensive research, and this line seems to be the most valid one...

"On 1/21/72, (4635vii) Ruth Barnard married Thomas' brother-in-law, (4635vii[1]) Joseph Peaslee. Ruth and Joseph's first child, Mary, was conceived out of wedlock and born on 7/14/72. Consequently, at the quartlerly court session at Salisbury on April 8,1673, "Joseph P. and Ruth, his wife, presented for fornication, confessed and were sentenced to be whipped tomorrow or pay a fine of 6 pounds". The record does not state which they choose."

Many websites list (4634) Thomas's wife as Elinore Morse, but nobody seems able to supply sources. I believe the confusion comes because (2317) Mary Barnard married 1st a Morse, and was thus "Mary (Morse) Barnard" when she married 2nd. Someone probably misconstrued this to mean that her mother was a Morse.

"Estate of (4634) Thomas Barnard, Sr., of Amesbury Essex Probate Docket # 1785
Administration upon the estate of Tho. Barnard, sr., late of Amsberie, who was killed by the Indians, was granted Oct. 9, 1677, to (4635) Elener, the relict, and she with as many of her husband’s children as she could get were ordered to come to the next Salisbury court for a division of the estate between the children and the widow.
