The Will of George Fitch "In the Name of god Amen The twelveth day of May in the yeare of our Lorde god one thousand six hundred and five I beinge sick in body but yet of perfect mynde and memory Thanks be to god therefore; utterly renouncing all former wylls and Testaments whatsoever heretofore by me made, doe nowe ordayne make and declare this my presant testament conteyninge therein my last wyll in manner and forme followinge:
"First and principallye I commende my soule unto almightie god my creator and to Jesus Christe my onely saviour and redemer and to the holie ghoste my sanctifier and comforter thre persons and one god, And my body to be buried in christian buriell
"Item I give unto (10057) Joane my welbeloved wife the somme of fouretie poundes of lawfull money of England to be paied unto her by myne executors in manner and forme following: That is to saie, twentie pounds within six monethes next after my decease And the more Twenty poundes within one whole yeare next and imediatly after my death and decease Also I wyll and devise unto the saide Joane my wief one Annuity or yerely rent or yerelie payment of five poundes the yeare for and during the full terme and tyme of seven yeres next ensuinge after my death half yearely to be paid her equall porcons out of my messuage or tenement landes and hereditaments withe their appurtenances scituate and beinge in Edwardstone aforesaide (if she shall so long live) The first payment thereof to beggin within one half yeare next after my decease, Moreover I give and bequeath unto the saide Joane my wiefe one downe bed and all other the household stuf and implements of household which I received with her by marriage, All which saide severall legacies Annuities and bequests I give and bequeath unto her uppon condicon That she shall nott challenge any Thirdes or Dowrye out of any my landes or tenements whatsoever and nott otherwise,
"Item I do devise and bequeath unto (5028) Thomas Fytch my eldest sonne after the end and determynacon of twenty yeares next ensuinge after my death and departure out of this life All That my messuage or tenement lienge and beinge in Edwardstone aforesaid And all the wainscoat and glasse now standinge and beinge uppon any windoes belonginge to the same; Together with all and singular my landes pastures meadowes feedinges and hereditaments whatsoever with their appurtenances, To have to hould the same after the tyme aforesaid to him and to the heires of his body lawfully begotten uppon this Condicon following and not otherwise That is to saie, that the saide Thomas shall and will well and truely content and pay or cause to be paied unto my foure children viz. (1057ii) George, (1057iii) Joseph, and (1057iv) Arthur, my sonnes, and (1057v) Fraunces my daughter the full and whole somme of threscore thirtene poundes six shillinges and eighte pence of lawfull English money in manner and forme followinge, viz. unto George, Arthur and Fraunces and to eyther of them the somme of twentye poundes,
"...And to Josephe the somme of thirtene poundes six shillinges and eighte pence within one whole yeare next after the saide Thomas shall by force of this my saide wyll enter into the foresaide messuage or tenement landes meadowes pastures feedinges and heredititaments with their appurtenses, Provided always that if it shall happen the saide Thomas my sonne to make defalte of paymente of and in the foresaide somme of threscore thirtene poundes six shillinges and eighte pence or of any parte or parcell thereof contrary to the forme before expressed, Then I will and further devise that the saide George my second sonne shall enter into the foresaide messuage or tennement landes meadowes pastures feedings & hereditaments with all and singular their appurtennes;
...And the same to the best advantage shall sell And the money thereof arisinge and commynge shall firste pay or cause to be paide unto the said Joseph, Arthur and Fraunces their aforesaide severall sommes, of the which saide severall sommes with his saide somme of twentie poundes being paide and discharged shall pay and yeild up or cause to be paied yeilded up or delivered unto the saide Thoms my sonne all the surplufage or overplus of the money that shall be and remaine in the handes and custody of him the saide George for the sale of the saide messuage or tennement and other the premisses; and yf the sayd George shall cause to make sale of ye foresaide messuage or tennement & all other the premisses as is afore menconed then I will and further devise That the saide Joseph Arthur and Fraunces or for many of them as shall then be livinge shall by force of this my will enter into the aforesaide messuage or tennement as aforesaid, And the same to the best advantage shall sell, And the money thereof arisinge and comminge shall first paie and discharge them selves their saide severall sommes And the surplufage or overplus as beforesaide shall yeild up and deliver unto the saide Thomas Provided further and
"...nevertheles my true intent and meaninge is That if there shall nott be founde sufficient goodes which I now have or by any manner of wayes or meanes of right are due unto me to pay all such debts as (?) and discharge all such legacies (?) the charges of my funerall and Probate of my wyll then I will and further devise that my executors hereafter named shall by force of this
my will sell the foresaide messuage and tennement and all other the premisses (which my sonne Thomas before in this my will given upon condicon to the best advantage for and towarde the payment of all my saide debts and legacies discharging of my funerall and probate of my
will, the which all beinge performed the surplus or overplus of which money uppon the saide sales shall be yielded up and delivered unto the saide Thomas my sonne;
"Also I wyll and devise that my saide executors hereafter named shall sell my messuage and tennemente with th'appurtenances as it is scituate and beinge in Ballingdon the County of Essex and which I late purchased of one Sheppard of Ballingdon aforesaide, to the best advantage within a convenient tyme at their discrecone for and towards the payment of my debts and legacies as is aforesaide Item I give and bequeath unto George Fytch my saide sonne the somme of fourscore poundes of lawfull English money to be paid unto him at his age of two and twentie yeares and two paire of sheetes and my gould ringe that my name is uppon to be likewise delivered unto him at his age aforesaide,
"Item I give and bequeath unto Joseph Fytch my saide sonne the somme of fiftie poundes of lawfull money of England to be paied unto him at his full age of foure and twentie yeares; And two paire of sheetes to be delivered unto him at his age aforesaide Item I give and bequeath unto Arthur Fytch my saide sonne the somme of fourescore poundes of lawfull English money to be payed unto him at his age of two and twentie yeares And two paire of sheets to be delivered
unto him at his age aforesaide
"Item I give and bequeath unto Fraunces my saide daughter the somme of fourescore pounds of lawfull English money And one featherbed in the great chamber with all that belongeth unto it, And two downe pillowes And two paire of sheetes And my biggest brasse pot, to be paied and delivered unto her at her full age of one and twentie yeares Item I give and bequeath unto the aforesaide Fraunces my daughter out of my foresaide messuage or tennement and all other the premisses unto my sonne Thomas in this wyll before given one Annuitie or yearely rent or yearely payment of five poundes the yeare half yearely to be paied by even and (?) porcons untill she shall accomplish here saide full age of one and twentie yeares or the day of her marriage which shall first happen, the first payment thereof to beggin with six moneths next
after my decease Item I will and it is my true meaninge that father french shall have his Annuitie or yerely rent of sixe poundes a yeare payed unto him accordinge to his sonnes will, Also I will that my children shall have their silver spoones that were given them at their Christeninges
"Item I will and my meaninge is that Joane my wife shall contynue in my messuage or tennement wherein I nowe dwell and Arthur my sonne and Fraunces my daughter there with her duringe the terme of sixe monethes next ensuinge after my decease And that they shall have during all the saide tyme sufficient maynetenance for their diet, And after the saide six monethes ended I will that my saide daughter Fraunces shall contynue with my saide wife untill she shall be fit to be placed in some good and convenient service, And that my sonne Arthur in the meane tyme or soe soone as conveniently may be shall be bound an apprentice to some good trade or occupacon, Also I give and bequeath unto Robte Stebbing three shillinges foure pence of lawfull English money
"Item I give unto John French one silver spoone, Item I give and bequeath unto Robte French one silver spoone Moreover I wyll and bequeath the saide John French and Robte French shall have their tipped pottes given unto them with their fathers will and testament Also I will that Bridget Gosse and Suzan Gosse shall eithere of them
have one ring accordinge to the last will of French
"Item I give and bequeath unto Marie Burgis my grande child the somme of sixtene poundes of lawfull English money to be paied unto her at her full age of one and twentie yeares, Also I give unto the saide Marie Burgis one brasse bot to be delivered to her father to her use (?) after my decease
"Item I give unto Sara Taylor my wifes daughter the somme of thirtie shillinges,
"Finnally all the residue of my yardes rights credites cattles and chatteles readye money and plate whatsoever which I now have in myne owne custodye or which be or remaine in any other place unbequeathed my debts and legacies beinge first paied my funerall and the Probate of my (will)
togeather withall charges concerninge the same borne and susteyned I give them wholly to Thomas my sonne and William Fytch my brother, which saide Thomas and William I make constitute and ordeyne executors of this my last will and Testament, desiringe them in good behalf to see the same truely executed performed and doon according to my true intent and meaninge herein as my sure truste is they will. In witness whereof to every leaf of this my last wyll and teastament beinge foure leaves in number I have set my handle and to the last my seale the day and yeare first wrytten.

"Memorandum these wordes of his bodye lawfully begotten beinge in the first leaf and xxvi th lyne were interlyned before th'ensealinge and delivery hereof, And also these wordes one feather bolster two pillowes one coverlet two blanckets beinge three tymes repeated in the second leaf towards the later end thereof of the same leaf, And almost thre lynes in the third leaf were razed before th'ensealinge and delivery hereof, as almoste five lynes in the said third sheet or leaf nowe likewise razed: before th'ensealinge and delivery hereof in the presence of the aforenamed parties, viz. George Culpeck, Chrystofer, yeoman and of me, Phillip Clarke wryter hereof the marke of George Culpek, Sara [T]alar, Christofer yeoman

"In the church at Worth, where he lived and died, there is another marble plaque on the wall. It containes the following inscription paianted on the stone. Above it is a shield of the family arms depicting fourteen different families, two on his Whitfield side, twelve on his wife's Manning side, as follows. Also there is a floor slab of black basalt to them in the south transept of the church. It has a shield of arms of Whitfield impaling Manning...
"He was said to be "of Mortlake, County Sussex, England"."
