Many have connected (4936) Thomas Buttolph with the Biddulph family of Staffordshire, who derive their name from an estate in that county. Whereas the Biddulph name and its variants are widespread throughout England, however (with greatest concentration in Lancashire, Cheshire, Stafford and Warwick), the Buttopph name (which derives from St. Botolph is virtually unique to Norfolk.

(4936) Thomas Buttolph was a tenant on the Townshend estates in the Raynham district of Norfolk, and is credited by most as having been born there; and one researcher (Edith Boyle rus23se134@juno.com) has suggested another Thomas Buttolph of "Yarmouth" as a possible father:

The following inscription was found in St. Nicholas' church, Yarmouth:

"CASTRO POWDERHAM IN ARGO DEVONIENSI NAVIS PRAESIDIARIAE, CAPITANEUS, QUI CONTRA BELGAS PRO REGE ET PATRIAE FORTIIER DIMICANS LETHALI VULNERE PETITUS ORBIIT VICESIMO DIE NOVEMBRIS Anno Domini 1673

Next to this, northerly, is this,

"MORS MIHI LUCRUM EST.
HERE UNDER LYETH BURIED THE BODYE OF THOMAS BVTTOLPH ALDERMAN DECEASED THE LAST DAY OF FEBREWARYE ANNO DOMINI 1614."

a little more to the north were stones of Rich[ard] Ferrier, Armigeri; and nearby another of the remains of Mrs. Sarah Leake (1695/96-25 Mar. 1743), widow of John Leake, Gent., nephew of Sir Andrew Leake, Admiral of the Blue and Roberti Gallant, M.B. (1690/91-27 June 1746). to the south were stones for Mrs. Eliz. Missenden (1695/96-18 Apr. 1751); and Mary (nee) Haford (1571/72-16 July 1622), d/o John of Haford, Worcester, Gent., w/o Thomas Clarke, Gent. "Collector of their Majestys Customs in this port of Yarmouth".

A Thomas Buttolph was listed among the mayors/ bailiffs of Yarmouth (1608):

"1603 1 Henry Stanton, John Gyles
1604 2 Jeffrey Ponyet, William Graye
1605 3 Thomas Mortymer, William Younges
1606 4 William Crowe, John Crowland
1607 5 John Couldham, Gregory Goose
1608 6 Thomas Buttolph, Thomas Gyles
1609 7 John Wheeler, Benjamin Cooper
1610 8 Isaac Cooper, Augustine Yonges
1611 9 Robert Scarth, Robert Robins
1612 10 John Greenwood, George Hardware
1613 11 John Greyes, Nicholas Bright
..."

A William Buttolph, possibly a brother of Thomas Jr., served as Bailiff in 1628:

"1623 21 Thomas Thompson, Leond. Holmes
1624 22 John Trendle, Thomas Johnson, Esqrs.
1625 1 Edmund Owner, Robert Norgate
1626 2 John Echard, Robert Sayer
1627 3 John Warren, Henry Davy
1628 4 Benjamin Cooper, William Buttolph,
1629 5 Robert Norgate, Thomas Meadowe
1630 6 Ezekias Harris, John Stephenson
1631 7 Thomas Thompson, Thomas Green
1632 8 Godfrey Wilgres, Gyles Call
1633 9 Edward Owner, Thomas Crane
..."

The above William was involved in a dispute with Charles I over the dismissal of an alderman:

"Hence and order was made, to depute Mr. bailiff Buttolph, Sir John Wentworth, Miles Corbett, Esq. and alderman Johnson, or either of them, to appear and defend the town, by every eligible means. And on the 25th of May [1628] following Mr. Buttolph made his report concerning the obstacles that thad been thrown in his way, on his appearance to answer the said writ..."

It is possible that our Thomas was the son of William (ABT 1573-?) the Mayor of Yarmouth, who was in turn the son of Thomas (ABT 1543-1614) the Mayor. This is speculation, of course, but it makes far more sense than trying to connect Thomas to the Biddulphs of Staffordshire.
