FOURTEENTH GENERATION

9888. Rev. William Gillett

9889. Habiatha Pye

REF: http://mum202-2.musm.ttu.edu/all/d0005/g0000090.html#I7627

"(9888) William was confirmed Rector of the Chaffcombe Parish on 4 Feb. 1609/10. Chaffcombe lies 5 miles west of Crewkerne. William Gyllett signed the extant Bishops' Transcripts of the Chaffcombe Parish Registers as Rector of Chaffcombe in 1623 and 1638.

"William wrote his will in 1641. It was proved 16 Apr. 1641. The 2 Apr. 1641 inventory showed the estate to be worth £259/14/8, which included £13/6/8 for silver plate and an equal sum for books. In his will William referred to land which his son (9889viii) Nathan had made over to him by letter of attorney. To all his children in England he gave two silver spoones apiece. Beneficiaries were his children (9889iv) William, (9889v) Thomas, (9889vi) Jeremiah, (9889ii) Habiah and (9889iii) Mary. Overseers were Joseph Greenfield, Mr. Luffe, brother Richard and kinsman Henry Hutchins."

NOTES: In 1639, (9897iii) Thomas Bancroft published at London a quarto volume of 86 pages bearing the title of Two Bookes of Epigrammes and Epitaphs, containing among other verses the following dedicated to the poet's brother (4948) John:

You sold your land the lighter hence to go
to foreign coasts, yet (Fate would have it so)
did ne'er New England reach, but went with them
That journey toward the New Jerusalem.

This is cited by McCracken (The American Genealogist v. 37, p. 156 [1961]) as evidence that (4948) John Bancroft died in passage to the New World. The above Thomas is conjectured by McCracken to have been the father of Lt. Thomas Bancroft who died in Lynn, Essex, MA in 1791.

FIFTEENTH GENERATION

19776. William Gillott, Lord Mayor of Leicester

19777. unknown

REF: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2542910&id=I533301532

"I am surprised at all the misinformation about (39552?) Jaques de Gylet. He was not the father of the (9888) Rev. William Gillett, Rector of Chaffcombe. Rev. William Gillett was the son of Alderman William Gillott, Lord Mayor of Leicester (1571). The name 'Gillett' began to emerge in this line of the family in the early 1500's. Rev. William Gillett's brother also was Lord Mayor in 1600, and used his influence to help William become Rector of Chaffcombe the same year. In fact, Gillotts/ Gilletts held the civic chair of Lord Mayor in Leicester for nearly 200 years. They are descended from the Gillotts earlier seated at Warwickshire, from Peirre (Peter) Gillott, Lord of Broughton, Thorpe, and Armsby. They immigrated from Gilleste, Lavoy, France in 1307. Pierre was the son of Johannas Gillot, born in France in 1250. Another important note, your ancester, Jonathan Gillett (with brothers Nathan and Jeramiah) were not the first Gilletts in America. Rather their first cousin, Robert Gillett and his son, Richard were..."

NOTE: None of the above has been verified, and nobody I know of has been able to contact K. L. Basnett. There certainly was a Gillott family in Leicester:

In the same reference, in 1505 "Maister Ric. Gillot" was listed as "Alderman" (7th ward)", and Will. Gillott and Mr Ric. Gillot were listed as taxpayers in that ward.

"...The Mayor might happen to be one of the Masters of the [Corpus Christi] gild himself; in 1493-4 Swyke and Croft were Masters. Croft was Mayor that year, Swayke in the preceding. This was accidental, for in 1500 Roger Wigston and Richard Gillot were Masters, and neither had been Mayor for some time past..."

A Richard Gillot was Mayor in 1467:

"Hall Book, p. 226. [Oct. 16, 1467]...

"For a remedy and amendment of the premisses, this acte and ordinaunce was conceyued and proposed by the good aduise, intent and discrescion of Richard Gillot Maire and all his bretherne then of the town of Leycestre, by a free will and generall assent, concent and agrement of all the comons of the said town assembled and companed.

"Att a comon halle holden at Leycestre the Fryday next afore the feste of Seynt Luce the euangelist, the vii yere of the regne of oure souerayne lorde Kyng Edwarde the fourth, yn the tyme of Mairalte off Richard Gillot, by the assent and agrement of the said Maire and his bretherne..."

There are probably many other references to the Gillots, by various spellings, in this work.

NOTE: Lea (NEHGR v. 56 p. 196 [1902]) notes that whereas (9896) Thomas Bancroft's grandfather is known to be (39584) John Bancroft, it is not clear which borther is Thomas' father. He chooses (19792) Ralph as the most likely candidate.
