THIRTEENTH GENERATION

4640. William Farr

4641. Faith Taylor

Several references have Thomas Farr and Elianor Creed as (2320) Stephen's parents. However, I have yet to find any evidence connecting Stephen to Thomas. There were a Thomas and Eleanor in America, according to the following:

"Middlesex County Records, Vol. III (compiled by John Cordy Jeaffreson, Middlesex County Records Society at the Clerwell Sessions House, 1888). For the year of 1656(/57):

"List of Capital Felons, pardoned on condition of transportation:-- Elianor wife of Thomas Farre, Thomas Snell, Abraham Staple, James Mason, Elizabeth Smith and Thomas Haughton were conditionally pardoned to be Transported etc."

and there was indeed a Thomas Farr in Boston on 2 Feb. 1645, the son of one Thomas Farrer of Burnley, Lancashire and the brother of Henry Farr, a mariner. On the above date, the younger Thomas executed a power of attorney, according to http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=steinman230052&id=I01786 c/o Ronald Robinson steinman230052@cs.com .

Very recent DNA testing, on the other hand, has conclusively linked (2320) Stephen with the Farrs of Aspley Guise and Wavendon, Bucks and of Kempston, Lidlington, Haynes, Blunham and neighboring areas in Bedfordshire. The evidence points to a most recent common ancestor around 1450-1550 (± some generations) with a known descendant of (18560) John Fayre (ABT 1510-1552) of Kempston and Aspley Guise through (4641iii) Thomas Farr (ABT 1637-1687) of Lidlington and Haynes.

The Thomas Farr (1618/19-??) who married Elianor Creed may have been the gggrandson of (37120) John Fayre through John's son (18560) William Farre (ABT 1541-1617) via (18561i) William and (18561i_a) Robert (ABT 1586-1638) of Haynes and Old Warden, Bedfordshire. This could not have been the Thomas of Boston, mentioned above, seeing that his father was Robert (not Thomas, as stated in the power of attorney), he had no brother Henry and he was not from Lancashire. His wife, moreover, was shown as Elizabeth (perhaps the Elizabeth Smith mentioned above?) rather than Elianor, which does not ease the general confusion about these people.. A Thomas Farr died in Lynn, Essex, MA in 1672 or 1694, depending on which website one believes, and his wife (whoever she was) seems to have died there in Jan. 1679/80.

Our ancestor Stephen, on the other hand, seems not to be closely connected with either Thomas of Lancashire or Thomas the son of Robert, but rather appears to have been the brother of (4611iii) Thomas of Lidlington. The birth of that Stephen was recorded in Lidlington along with his sister Elizabeth, but was no longer found in the English records afterwards -- consistent with his having come to Concord, MA some time before his marriage to (2321) Mary Taylor there in 1674. We do not know exactly when Stephen came over. If he were a religious dissenter, like most MA immigrants around that time, this may have explained his not being mentioned in his father's will. However he got to Middlesex Co., MA, he and his family seem to have remained there all their lives, and never to have gone to Essex Co. where Thomas (and another ancestor of mine, [4666] George Farr) lived.

Judging by the ages of (4642) William's wife and children, and his marriage date, I would guess his date of birth to have been ABT 1627/28, which accords well with the Toddington birthdate of Aug., 1621. If he came on the "Truelove" in 1635, then, as some have said, he would have been sixteen years old at the time -- and 75 when he dictated his will. There are, of course, other versions:

"This William was b. in 1618 and m. (4643) Mary Meriam. They emigrated on the ship Truelove in 1635 and settled in Lyme, then Concord. Their children were Mary, Samuel, John, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Abraham. William died Dec. 6, 1696. Mary Meriam died Dec 10, 1699. The Concord VR has more info on birthdates, etc."
