RANDALL & FARNSWORTH LINES continued

INDEX

ELEVENTH GENERATION

1164. Stephen Randall

1165. Mehitable Crane

1166. Jonathan Farnsworth

1167. Ruth Shattuck?

"It certainly looks as if the Shattuck line for descendants of Jonathan Farnsworth and Ruth Shattuck may be false, or quite "underproven" at best. I'll summarize my points here in the hopes that we can have a discussion about this matter --

"The Farnsworth Memorial, 2d editon says that the Ruth who married Jonathan Farnsworth was born 24 Jun 1678 to John and Ruth (Whitney) Shattuck. This is impossible, since John Shattuck died in 1675. Also, no evidence is given to support this identification. Bond's History of Watertown also says that Ruth was born 24 Jan 1667/8 to John and Ruth (Whitney) Shattuck. As with the Farnsworth Memorial, 2d editon, there is no evidence given to support this identification. And there are two things I find quite suspicious about this:

"1. Ruth, wife of Jonathan Farnsworth, had her last child in Groton MA in 1725. This would mean that Ruth was 57 years old!

"2... [Compiler's note: The spread of birth dates for the children indicates that (1167) Ruth was b. ABT 1682/83, with virtually no marginof error -- unless a second Ruth married Jonathan after Ruth Shattuck died. I have highlighted children who couldn't have been Ruth's, with red.]

"The _Memorials of the Descendants of William Shattuck_lists a slightly different birthdate for Ruth (24 Jun 1668), although it agrees that she was the daughter of John and Ruth (Whitney) Shattuck. It also says she "m. probably Jonathan Farnsworth." No evidence is given to support this identification or to explain the doubt about whom she married.

"Ruth's death record and tombstone evidently have not been found, so we can't even calculate her age from it. We know that Jonathan Farnsworth's wife Ruth was dismissed from the Groton church to the Harvard church in 1733, but not when she actually died. No marriage record has been found to tell us if perhaps Jonathan married twice, both times to a woman named Ruth. Stranger things have happened.

"I think that the 1678 birthdate makes more sense, unless we are dealing with two different women, in which case the 1667/8 birthdate could work for a first wife. However, we still lack evidence. And we still don't know where the 1678 birthdate came from and if the Ruth Shattuck born to John Shattuck in 1667/8 is really the one who married Jonathan Farnsworth. All we really know is that:

"1. Jonathan Farnsworth did marry a woman named Ruth, as shown in various church records and town VRs.

"2. A Ruth Shattuck was born in Watertown to John and Ruth (Whitney) Shattuck in 1668, although there is some conflict about the exact date.

"That's all we know for sure. Anyone care to help me figure this out? I appreciate any input.

(2330) Benjamin Crane of Marlborough, Middlesex, MA, was contemporary with another Benjamin Crane, husband of Mary Backus, living in Wethersfield, Hartford, CT. The two have often been confused, by Savage and others. In Marlborough, the Crane name apparently ended with Mehitable; but the Wethersfield line produced quite a brood of males.

A Benjamin Crane, b. BEF 1632 of Dedham and Dorchester, MA, deposed at Flushing, Queens, NY in 1653 about his time spent on the manor of Rev. Franciscus Daughty (an Anabaptist), in what is now Putnam Co., NY, BET 1642/52. I don't know which line he belongs to. While in Dedham (9 yrs.), he lived with a Mr. Howard, and in Dorchester he lived with a Mr. Clark. In Maspeth, Putnam, NY, he lived with the family of Adrian & Mary (Doughty) VonDerDonck. During a period of Anglo-Dutch hostility, they were driven out by Indians hired by the Dutch, and fled to Manhattan. Rev. Doughty removed to Virginia shortly afterward. Because (2330) Benjamin sold property in Medfield in 1651, it's unlikely that he was the Benjamin of NY. Rev. Doughty once ministered in Taunton; and since the Crane families of Medfield, Dorchester, Taunton and Braintree all seem to be related, the Benjamin Crane of Flushing and Putnam may very well have been (2330) Benjamin.

Death dates are not known for (2330) Benjamin and Elinor of Marlborough -- except that both died BET 1694/1726 of Stow or Sherborn, Middlesex, MA. Mehitable was described as their "natural and only beloved" daughter in 1694.

2332. Mathias Farnsworth

"FARNSWORTH, ...(2332) MATTHIAS, Lynn, Groton, an early propr. freem. 1670, selectman, by w. (2333) Mary, had (2333v) Joseph, b. 17 Nov. 1657, d. at 17 yrs.; Mary, 11 Oct. 1660; at L. and at G. had (2333ix) Samuel, 8 Oct. 1669, and prob. others, after, or more likely bef. as (2333iv) Benjamin, (2333iii) John, (2333ii) Matthew, and (2333ix) Samuel, had fams. there in 1691; d. 1689, aged 77. His will is of Jan. in that yr. See Butler's Hist. 395, 6. (2333vi) Mary m. 11 Apr. 1676, (2333vi[1]) Samuel Thatcher of [[vol. 2, p. 144]] Watertown."
