EIGHTEENTH GENERATION

151552. prob. John Elys Jr. of London

151553. unknown

(151552) John was the sole male heir named in his father's will.

NINETEENTH GENERATION

303104. prob. John Elys Sr. of London

303105. Margaret unknown

(303104) John made bequests to his wife and children, and to: Richard Pemrithe, Mercer of London, and John Bampton of Hull. This Hull connection, plus his holdings in Spalding, -- as well as the DNA and Staple of Calais connections noted below -- connect John with the Swineshead Ellises.

TWENTIETH GENERATION

606208. [prob. William] Ellis of Swineshead

606209. unknown

A DNA study has recently been conducted of male Ellises. Two of those tested -- a descendant of Levi Ellis (and therefore of (9472) John Ellis) and a descendant of a Henry Ellis of Lincolnshire -- show a 25-marker near-match, differing only at DYS 447:

"[Haplogroup] I1a is common among Icelandic populations, and is generally considered to indicate Scandinavian or Anglo-Saxon ancestry when it is found in a person of British descent... Haplotype #4 (our Ellis haplotype) is overwhelmingly of Scandanavian (vs. German or Frisian) origin."

The Norse made important inroads in NW Scotland, SE Ireland, Yorkshire & Lancashire; and The Danes lived mainly in N & E England, from Essex to Lancashire. The Scandanavian Normans, of course, settled all over England as a ruling class, but I haven't read anywhere that Ellis is a Norman name. As it stands, then, a heavily Danish- or Viking-influenced area like Lincolnshire is more likely to be our medieval Ellis homeland than, say, Gloucester or Kent.

Henry Ellis's line is as follows:

  1. Henry Ellis (1913-2001) of Bourne, Kesteven, Lincoln
        m. Lillian Reynolds
  2. Joseph Wilson Ellis (1874-1971) of Thurlby, Bourne
        m. Selena Maud Knipe
  3. John Edward Ellis (1834-) of Thurlby
        m. Elizabeth Ann Plowright
  4. John Ellis (1790-1873) of Bourne
        m. Mary Ann Opop
  5. John Ellis (1769-1829/30) of Bourne
        m. Sarah
  6. John Ellis (1728-) of Foston, Kesteven, Lincoln
        m. Elizabeth prob. Wilson
  7. Anthony Ellis (1668-1767) of Foston
        m. Mary Tow
  8. John Ellis (~1640-) of Westborough, Kesteven, Lincoln
        m. Isabell Mitton
  9. Anthony Ellis (1605/06-) of Westborough, Lincoln
        m. Ann
  10. prob. John Ellis (~1570- >1639) of Westborough or Ponton, Kesteven, Lincoln
        m. unknown
  11. Anthony Ellis (~1546-) of Westborough or Ponton, Lincoln
        m. unknown
  12. Anthony Ellis (~1509-) of North Stoke, Swineshead & Ponton, Lincoln
Merchant of the Staple [of Calais]
        m. Anne Sherard
  13. Thomas Ellis (~1482-1545/46) of Ponton & Swineshead
        m. Agnes Marshall
  14. John Ellys (~1452-1504) Elder, of Swineshead, Holland, Lincoln
        m. Agnes unknown
  15. prob. Anthony Ellis (~1418-) of Ponton & Swineshead
Wealthy Wool Merchant; Merchant of the Staple of Calais
prob. donated the tower of Holy Cross, Ponton
  16. (606208) prob. William Ellis (~1394-) of Swineshead
        prob. MRCA

Based on the DNA match, there is the following probability that someone born around the time of (606208) [prob. William] Ellis (i.e. approx. 660 years before sampling subject) is our Most recent common ancestor:

using FTDNA mutation rate, 94%
using constant rate of .0024, 74%
using McDonald mutation rate, 70%

The connection between Lincolnshire and Kent is explained by the fact that the patriarchs of this line were "Merchants of the Staple". It is reasonable to believe that (303104) John Elys Sr. oversaw shipments in London while his brother Anthony minded the manor in Lincolnshire. This Anthony is probably the one who donated the churchtower in Ponton. It contains a plaque with the arms of Henry VII (fl. 1485-1519), flanked by two lions: the one bearing the arms of the Staple of Calais, and the other those of Anthony Ellis

SRC: (1) For upper section : Maddison's Lincolnshire Pedigrees (1906, Ellis of Swineshead)

Madison's shows the patriarch as "Anthony or William Ellis" of Swineshead. Since Anthony bore the Swineshead arms in the time of Henry VII, his age would make him the most likely father of John Ellys, Elder. (303104) John of London was born around the right time to have been Anthony's younger brother. William was probably the patriarch, because the name "William" appears in both the Kent and Lincolnshire branches of the family.
