i. (2510) Walter Powers

"There is a book by O'Brien New England Settlers---that sez (sic) many Irish youths were kidnapped & shipped to New England on ship "Goodfellow" arriving in early 1654 @Marblehead, Ma & all were sold into servitude for 7 to 9 yrs. The author believes our ancestor immigrant (2510) Walter Power was on that ship. Almost no Irish records survive today until the 1850's. We have verified the ship "Goodfellow"'s sailing but no manifest/passengers lists have been found yet...
"By the 17th century there were many landowner families of name POWER, almost all in Co. Waterford, the biggest estate, according to the CIVIL SURVEY OF 1654 being that of John Power of Donooyle (Dunhill) & Kilmeaden. This John was dispossessed by Cromwellians & was NOT restored under Charles II. ACCORDING TO A PEDIGREE in the Genealogial Office, Dublin, drawn up by Sir William Betham, Ulster King of Arms,,, the PROGENITOR OF THE FAMILY was WILLIAM POWER of KNOCHADERRY, county Waterford, "son of John, Baron of Kilmeaden...."
-- Albert Powers c/o http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?walter,power,ireland::powers::4297.html
"The name (2510) Walter Power appears in the Middlesex county record...in 1654 as a boy of fourteen years; on "[th]e eleventh daye of [th]e first month 1660" was married to (2511) Trial, daughter of (5022) Deacon Ralph and (5023) Thankes or Thankeslord Sheppard at Malden... The fact that Stepney Parish is in London, Essex, and that both William and Walter Power appear among the family names of Essex, and that Lord Littleton, for whom Littleton, Middlesex county, Massachusetts, was named, member of parliament for Essex, gives color to the claim of that section as his birthplace..."

"In Farmer's Genealogy of New England's Pioneers he refers to (5020) John Power of Charlestown, who had a son (5021ii) Peter, born 1643, as probably the founder of the families by the name of Powers in New England, but a careful investigation does not prove this to be the case, and Dec. 3, 1645, "(5021) Sally Power, inhabitant of New England, in the town of Charlestown, being authorized and ordained to make sale of the housen and lands of my absent husband, John Power, as by letter of attorney appeareth." Sold to Gandy James the dwelling house and appurtenances, and 5 acres of planting land adjoining. He is also referred to as John Power, "hosier," and it is probable that not finding his business as "hosier" profitable in the New Country he returned to Europe and later sent for his family."

Note that the above places the sojourn of John Power in New England before the arrival of the Goodfellow -- making it unlikely that he was one of the "kidnapped Irishmen", and rather likely that he was the brother of (5021ii) Peter. On the other hand, note the DNA results:
Power, Powers -- Family name of Norman-Irish origin, first found in Devonshire
The yDNA (2510) Walter Powers' line has been reported at the Power Et Al DNA and History Project, and found of be of Hg R1b1:

Walter's DNA (typified by #Z39XW and JXU29) does not match any of the Power /de Paor families of Waterford, Ireland (which are mostly Hg I1*).
Haplogroup R1b1b2, aka M269, formerly called R1b1c, is associated with Western Europe and Britain, where it is by far the most prevalent haplogroup. The Walter Power DNA is a subset of the "Celtic/ Basque" or "Atlantic" Modal Haplotype. Kevin D. Campbell, in Journal of Genetic Genealogy 3:1-13, 2007, identifies Walter Power's DNA pattern as belonging to OGAP24. This group is apparently common in Ireland and the Western Isles (REF: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Megaw_McGaw/default.aspx?section=results).

Tradition in the family preserved in manuscript records that, (2510) Walter [Powers] landed at Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony, in 1654, and that he married the daughter of a London goldsmith [??]. 10044. Isaac (Shephard/) Shepard
Shepard -- Family name, of Anglo-Saxon origin, first found in Dorset
I have seen (10044) Isaac proposed as Ralph's father (prob. because Ralph had a son named Isaac), but have never seen documentation to show that Ralph of London was the same person as Isaac's son Rarlph, b. in Derby.
