NOTES FOR (5010) REV. JOHN MOSS:
John Moss was in New Haven as early as 1645, perhaps earlier, and was a member of the General Court during several sessions. In 1670 at the May session he was active in procuring the act of incorporation of Wallingford, and succeeded on the 12th day of May, 1670, at Hartford. He was evidently the leading man of the new settlement, and was the pioneer of the settlers, being on the ground certainly as early as 1667, perambulating the country in that region for the purpose of settling a village there.

NOTES FOR (5011viii) JOHN MOSS JR.:
New Haven County Court Records, Vol I, p 252: (5011viii) John Moss Jr., along with (5015viii[1]) Ebenezer Clark and Joseph Royce, all of Wallingford, filed a complaint against Winfred Benham Sr. and Winfred Benham Jr., her daughter, that Sarah Clark, daughter of said Ebenezer Clark, Elizabeth Lathrop, and John Moss, son of the said (5011ix) John Moss Jr., were frequently and sorely afflicted in their bodis by the sid Benhams, mother and daughter or their apparitions. The accused was Winifred King of Boston who married Joseph Benham of New Haven in 1657. Although the case was dismissed, there appearing nothing material against her, save spectral evidence, Winfred was "searched several times for Tets; they tried the Experiment of casting her into the Water, and after this she was Excommunicated by the minister of Wallingford." (Robert Calef's "More Wonders," published 1700.)

"The 3 Charles' (John, (5011) Abigail, & 9 y.o. sister Mary), as well as (5010) John Moss, sister Sarah Moss Geare and her husband John sailed for the new world in a ship "Winterhee" which was wrecked off Barbados. John Geare was lost at sea. Eventually the survivors were transported to Charlestown, Suffolk, MA. John Charles apparently married Sarah Moss Geare; and Abigail Charles married John Moss."

"I caught an error on my database that I now find everywhere, that John Moss came from Cotheridge Parish in Wiltshire - I, for one, found that I copied this info from Banks book and found in this folder a correction made by Carl, Morse Society's England researcher: Cotheridge Parish is in Worcestershire County, not Wiltshire...

OGAP-1 is widely spread in the UK, with a greater distribution in SW & NW England, Wales and Scotland. OGAP-2, which most closely matches the yDNA of (5010) John Moss, is distributed more in Ireland (especially so) and the Isle of Man, northern England and Northern Scotland; though it also has a UK-wide distribution. Neither OGAP (= Bryan Sykes' "Oxford Genetic Atlas Project") group appears to have much affinity to Worcester.
Moss -- Family name, of Norman origin, first found in Lancashire. In 1891, the surname was found mainly in Lancashire and London in England, and in Lanarkshire in Scotland. Based on this and the DNA evidence, it's not unreasonable to suppose that both Moss lines, described above, are originally from Lancashire.
