[1024] Hendrick Jocemse Schoonmaker was probably the `Hein Schomaker' christened November 29, 1624, at St. Petri Church, Hamburg, Germany, son of (2048) Jochim Schomaker. He came to America prior to the year 1652, and upon becoming associated with the Dutch in New Netherlands, changed the spelling of his name to SCHOONMAKER. According to a Book by Ruth Heidgard, (1024) `Hendrick Jochannes Schoonmaker' (1624-1682) immigrated from Hamburg Ger. to the Netherlands, and from there to Albany NY where he married widow (1025) Elsie Janse (Vanbreastade) VanAlcmser. His children used the surname Hendricks, & his grandchildren used the surname Schoonmaker. Another account states he came to America in 1654 as a Lieutenant in the Army of Holland. He was stationed at Ft. Orange (now Albany) until 1664, when England took control of the Colony.

Most of the following is from THE SCHOONMAKER FAMILY by Ruth P. Heidgerd (1974):

The first record found of (1024) Hendrick in the country is in the Minutes of the Court of Fort Orange and Beverwyck in the proceedings dated April 29, 1653... The birth of their first child appears in the proceedings of November 9, 1653

Four times between 1666 and 1671 he served on the board of magistrates as `schepen'... It is evident that Hendrick Johemsz was an important personage in the new colony and they he transmitted the same energetic temperment to his descendents. His wife, (1025) Elsie Jans, likewise, apparently enjoyed litigation as much as the men, for the Court Minutes are full of references...

(1027) Trijntje Matthisdochter Bosch came from a family that lived around the countryside to the north and east of Woerden and also in the city of Woerden in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Her immediate fa mily came from Indijk, the Dutch section of Harmelen, known to be living there in 1602.

On March 17th, 1653, her husband, (1026) Cornelis), gave power of attorney to Jan Corszoon Rietvelt (a partner of his)in 1653 in Woerden for him to collect the proceeds and titles from the sale of her share of the goods she inherited from the estate of her father. She and her family emigrated shortly afterward to New Amsterdam and then settled in Esopus (now Kingston), NY. When her husband was thrown in the British guardhouse for defending himself after being threatened by captain Broadhead, Trintje and many of the townspeople marched on the British garrison at Kingston to demand his release. When captain Broadhead told the people he would keep (1026) Cornelis as long as he wanted, she filed a complaint with the English Governor. At court, (1026) Cornelis was exonerated and captain Capt. Broadhead was suspended from duty for violating orders not to harass the Dutch citizens; he died three months later.
