"Joseph Wheeler who came to the Wyoming Valley in the 1760's. He is found in the records of the Susquehanna Company. He seems to have bought land early with the Susquehanna Company, but soon seems to be affiliated with the Pennamites."

"According to the family historical records, (256) Hendrick II "went along the Old Mine Road (officially the oldest toll road in North America) with (515iii[1]) Col. Tom Quick" to the Delaware Valley, where he bought land & built a fort, later called the First Forty Fort, or Old Forty Fort. (256) Hendrick came to Minisink about 1732 with his family. The Pennsylvania Archives (2nd series, vo 19, p 763) state that in 1732 Thomas Quick, Hendrick and others presented a petition to puchase some vacant land on (the West) side of the Delaware River (in present Monroe Co., PA, near Stroudsburg) from the Indians who owned it, and were temporarily refused. The two Schoonmaker families that reached the Delaware changed the spelling of their name from Schoonmaker to SHOEMAKER. Many of (256) Hendrick's children settled near Old Smithfield, and their headstones & monuments will be found in that cemetary...
"The descendants of Hendrick, after living for seventy years in Pennsylvania, spread back to New York State (particularly Tioga and Chemung Counties) and across the the Delaware into New Jersey. As the surname was no longer SCHOONMAKER, great care must be taken to distinguish these Shoemaker's from the many other Shoemaker families in these other areas."

"(In 1732) A Mr. William ALLEN bought 10,000 acres of land in the Minisink Region from the heirs of Governor William PENN. He later sold this land to The VanAKENs, SCHOONMAKERs, DECKERs, WESTFALLs, COOLs, and other families that settled there. His failure to pay the Indians for their claims to this property resulted in a long series of hostilities that lasted for several decades."

"from Delsa Bost, the author of the DeVore book.
"`This is what she wrote me in 1993 after my trip to Salt Lake. "regarding your question about John Tomlinson and wife, possibly Hannah Devore I do not know the answer. I know there was a William DeVore living in Bedford PA in the year 1779 and he owned 100 acres of land there. In 1784 there were 5 whites in his family. I have never been able to find any names of wife and or children. He was not listed in 1790 census of Bedford. He was apparently the first DeVore in Bedford. He may have moved to VA, but I cannot prove anything.
"`In about 1780 there was a family of John Hairns, Sr. born 14 Dec 1746 and wife Lanah (Leanor) DeVore born 8 May 1752, living in Bedford. His will was proved in Bedford 3 May 1813. These people would be the same age as your Hannah. They had a daughter Hannah and their eldest child was Daniel Hains. I do not have birthdates except for second son Henry Hains on 11 Mar 1782. Perhaps your Hannah DeVore would be a sister of Lanah. I bellieve (though I cannot prove it) that Lanah was Helena daughter of Willeam Devoor born about 1715 and wife Catherine Schoonmaker and was christened 10 June 1753 in Smithfield, Monroe Co, PA But they do not have a daughter Hannah. The only real clue I have is that Aaron DeVore (I believe) signed John Hains' will as Lanah's family member.'"

"(258) Nicholas DUPUY... came to the lower Pocono Mountain area in 1725. Two years later, he purchased 3000 acres from the Indians, and was the earliest white man to settle in the Shawnee section of the lower Pocono Mountains. This land was later repurchased by Nicholas DUPUY from William PENN's Chief Justice ALLEN.
