"Charles Lewin" was shown on a handwritten family tree, which has circulated to various branches of the family, as the father of (79) Mary Ann Lewin. This same tree lists siblings of Mary Ann as (159vii) Matilda m. (159vii[1]) Mr. Arnold, (159v) Mariam. (159v[1]) Mr. Reynolds, (159vi) Louisa and (159viii) R_ss___, who were the children not of a Charles, but of (158) John Field Lewin and (159) Mary ___. The Charles on the handwritten tree was probably confused with another sibling, (159iv) Charles Field Lewin. The christening dates indicate that most of the children were not baptized near their birthdates. It is possible that these Lewins were of the Methodist faith, as were their descendants; this would explain the late christenings and also the lack of a baptismal record for Mary Ann. Alternatively, the children may simply have been b. out of wedlock
(79) Mary Ann was married 1827 by license, suggesting that her parents were still alive but she did not seek or could not get their consent. (159v) Maria's marriage in 1835 was also by license, witnessed by sister (159vi) Louisa, rather than a parent; so the parents may have been dead by then. The lack of any witness from her husband's family may indicate that an objection to the marriage may have come from that side. Louisa's wedding, in 1837, was witnessed by her sisters Matilda and Mary Ann and brother-in-law Edward. (159i) John Field Lewin Burnell's marriage in 1931 to (159i[1]) Ann Goodwin (probably a relative of his mother's first wife) was witnessed, apparently, by a kinsman of his mother. The wedding was after posting of banns, so no parental objection was evident; so John's parents were probably infirm or dead then. No satisfactory death dates have been found for (158) John & (158) Mary in the Free BMD (which began in Sep. 1837), nor are they in the 1841 census; so they probably died before 1837. Some websites have (159) Mary Burnell marrrying William Stranks, on 27 May 1815 in St. Mary's, Hardwick, Bucks -- a date which would have excluded the possibility that she could have been married to (158) John Field Lewin. The witnesses to this marriage, according to http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hrohrer&id=I032994 The witnesses at the Stranks wedding were William Batson and John Millburn. At the marriage of William & Mary's daughter Jane to Richard Symons on 10 Dec. 1842, the witnesses were George Markham and again, John Millburn. None of (159) Mary Burnell's near kin stood as witnesses for these weddings, even though Mary's father (318) [or poss. bro. (319iii)] George Burnell and brother (319iv) John West Burnell stood as witnesses at Mary's marriage and her son's marriage, respectively. "Mary" was a common name in England at the time, but the name "John West" was rare if not unique; so the most reasonable explanation is that William Stranks married a different Mary Burnell. |

"Francis Lewin was at Bushey Hall in about 1750."
"Arthur Jones' Hertfordshire 1731-1800 as recorded in the Gentleman's Magazine includes the following entries under "Marriages":
"'19 July 1791. Rev. Dr. [Spencer James] Lewin, of Bushey, to Miss Elizabeth Capper, of the same place.'
"There is an editorial note:
"'The manor of Bushey was purchased in 1719 by Richard Capper, Esq., and remained in the Capper family for four generations. His great-grandson, Robert sold in 1814. It seems that the Lewin / Lewen family may have been tenants for part of this time. [AJ]'"
