NOTE: The IGI shows "Leyton, Sussex". I have not been able to find "Leyton, Sussex" on any map. I believe this was a mistake for "Leyton, Essex" (in the West Ham registration district, now part of Greater London), right next to the Hackney Marshes, where the Larters ran their dairy cattle.
(72) John Larter's occupation (Cow Keeper), SRC: Marriage banns of son (36) James Thomas Larter to (37) Mary Ann Shrives
"I read your meaning of what Larter means. Yes, there is one surname book that mentions it's probably a nickname for cheater or deceiver, but I don't think this is entirely correct. I have, as founder of the Larter Family History Society in Suffolk, England, undertaken extensive research into the meaning and origin of this surname. My research has in fact shown it to be a corruption of Laughter, an old English spelling of the Scandinavian word 'lattre' meaning 'a place where animals lay their young'. To explain the full meaning and origin of Larter would take up too much space here, but if you would like further details of my research, and of our society, please do contact me."
