*The family Bible says they were married in Sweden and Johann became a US citizen in 1893. No mention of marriage is made by the vicar in Sweden, who recorded Othilda as emigrating to America in 1891. The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900, lists (18) John A. Linden's marriage to Othilda H. Henriksson as 1 July 1889, recorded in Will Co., IL (#00013057). If this is the right Othilda, we might assume that she married in the US, then later returned to Sweden for a visit, staying with her father. She would have been eight months pregnant with Artur Walfrid when she returned to the US.

"The 1920 Joliet Census has a John Linden, Wire Mill Worker, b. 1864/65 Sweden, living at 211 Harwood St. Joliet, IL (ED 155 Sheet 30B). Living with him were Othilda, b. 1869/70 Sweden, emigrated 1887 and naturalized 1889. John was listed as emigrating in 1884 and naturalized in 1889. Also living with them were son (prob. 19ii.) Elmer, b. 1892/93 and his wife Wilma, b. 1900/01 in Germany.

The 1930 census shows John at the same address (he owned the house), again born 1864/65, married 1889/90 and emigrating 1884. "Tilda", b. 1869/70, is again shown as emigrating 1887."

John's obituary (Joliet Evening Herald-News, Tuesday, July 29, 1941) says,

"He was born in Sweden and came to America when he was twelve years old as a stowaway on a ship."

Obituaries are notoriously inaccurate, being based on the fading memories of elderly relatives. If John had really been twelve wehn he immigrated, that event would have happened in 1877/78. The 1920 and 1930 censuses agree, however, that John immigrated in 1884 (at age 19). If that immigration date, plus the birthdate from the family Bible, are to be trusted, then the only person matching this description in the Swedish records is:

b. 1865 Jan. 12 in Döderhult, Kalmar county,
emigrated 1884 May 30 from Djurshult in Döderhult....

There was a Johannes Linden b. 1865 in the 1890 Malmöhus census. "

*SRC: Marriage license of John A. Linden and Othilda Henriksson. Information for "(36) Larson Lindon" (sic) was supplied by (19) Othilda. She misspelled her husband's name, as well as his father's. For (18) John Linden's mother's name, she entered "don't remember". Since "Larson" was not a given name, I suspect that this was actually the surname of John's father ("Linden" was a common alias among Swedes, taken on when there were too many people with the same patronymic or surname in the community). Considering Othilda's spelling and memory problems on the nervous occasion, it is even possible that "Larsson" was mistaken for a similar-sounding name, such as "Persson". The marriage license was filled out hurriedly: The County clerk who filled out most of the form and witnessed the wedding -- Henry H. Stassen -- misspelled Othilda's name as "Othilda H. Hinrecksen. I suspect that neither John (who did not capitalize his first name) nor Othilda spoke or wrote English very well at the time (Both were very recent immigrants), and that Mr. Stassen spoke little or no Swedish.

It is possible that John's father was Per Larsson or Per Person. See notes under (18) John Linden for this.

On 2 Dec. 1906, 30-yr.-old (poss. 39iii.) Olaf B. Henrikson, single male literate carpenter, entered the US at New York, NY on the Colon, of Colon, Panama. He was 5'8½" lt. cplx., lt. hair, blue eyes, b. Sweden. His destination was a friend, A. Möller, 217 E. 53rd St. NYC. He was a non-immigrant alien who had previously lived 2 years in New York. The same Olof Henrikson entered the US 14 Mar. 1907, destined to the same address, aboard the C. F. Tietgen from Copenhagen. This Olof was a Danish non-immigrant alien, 5'10½" tall, b. Helsingborg.

The obituary of (19) Mrs. Othilda Linden from Joliet Herald news, lists her "brother (39iii.) Olaf Hendrickson, Chicago" as a survivor, along with her unnamed father, three sisters and two other brothers in Sweden.
