Imagine the lines of a Viking karv or inshore yacht. Now modify the stern for screw propeller propulsion; set the LOA at 21' 6" ( LWL 20' ) with a beam of 7' 2" ( BWL 5' 9" ). Remove the mast and oarholes and install a 7 IHP, two cylinder, half trunk, vibrating lever, back-acting engine ( ala Ericsson's "Monitor" engine ) and a 25+ sq.ft. watertube boiler capable of burning wood or liquid fuel. Construct and assemble all of this so the total weight, ready to steam, is about 1,500 pounds. Now you've got the idea.
I had hoped to be well along on the construction of the hull by this time, but a serious health "problem" ( now remedied ) and move to a different home delayed things. This has probably been to advantage as some things, which would have complicated the entire project ( remember the KISS adage? ), have been changed or eliminated. Tentative construction start date is now Fall of 2004. Details of the design/construction may be found by selecting the "DESIGN" button to the left
I've retained some features from the "old" Steam Launch Artemis website. The Steamboat PRIMER and Steamboat FAQs pages were/are widely used and referenced. The same is true of the LINKS page. And McANDREWS HYMN is simply too dear to me - everyone into marine engineering should read it! Use the buttons to the left.
I've worked hard to make this website not only informative - to the "oldtimer" as well as the "newbie" - but also pleasing to the eye. Near the bottom of this page are AWARDS that this site has won and of which I am justifiably proud!
All of the art work and most of the photos and drawings on this website are from my collection. If they are not, permission has been obtained from the owner and is noted on the page.
