Burnell is and Anglo-Saxon name from the same area. Family tradition is that (79) Mary Ann's last name was ""Lewin", but the IGI and the marriage certificate both show her as "Mary Ann Lewin Burnell". The marriage is recorded in Parish registers, 1745-1900 Church of England. St. Matthew's Church (Bethnal Green, Middlesex). Microfilm of original records at the London Metropolitan Archives, London. Mary Ann is shown to have been a spinster at time of marriage. They were married by license in the church, with no consenting party listed.
The name "Lewin" is also a common Jewish name in England, but there is no family tradition of any Jews in this family. As for the "Burnell" name, a John Burnell was Lord Mayor of London in 1787.
