"The Australian ancestors were (18) George W. Larter's (brother & sister). One of them wrote home... that he got a job as a bush ranger and had to fight off horse stealers, got shot at ...(and) was given the job of collecting mail on horseback from 200 miles away."

-- Enid Marsh 15 Aug. 2000

"Mr. [(18) George William] Larter belonged to a family which had lived in Hackney, Middlesex, England for several generations, going back to the eighteenth century. The earlier members of the family farmed land in South Hackney, Middlesex, England when the district was still rural, and many of them were buried in Hackney, Middlesex, England churchyard." A farm house in Harrow-gate-road, now turned into a garage, was formerly the home of the family, and in this building Mr. George Larter was born."

-- Obituary of G.W. Larter, Hackney, Middlesex, England Gazette, 19 Apr. 1929

Compiler's note: I have not found anyone from this family on the 1881 UK Census. Were they abroad? A Mary M. Larter, a Shirtmaker b. 1859/60 in Homerton, London, was a visitor of Edward C. Stewart at 576 Old Fort Road, London in 1881. This Edward had a son, Charles W. Stewart (b. 1869/70) and three daughters. In 1871, the Larter's neighbors on Gloucester Rd. were the family of John Curtis (1814/15-).

Marriage certificate states winesses James Wortley, Mary Ann (poss.[73i] Larter?) Webster and (poss. 73?) Maria Larter. Banns by J. H. Woodroffe, Curate.

SEVENTH GENERATION

72. John Larter

73. Maria/ Marie Mary unknown

REF: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/search_all1.asp?indid=&spouse_id=

NOTE: The IGI shows "Leyton, Sussex". I have not been able to find "Leyton, Sussex" on any map. I believe this was a mistake for "Leyton, Essex" (in the West Ham registration district, now part of Greater London), right next to the Hackney Marshes, where the Larters ran their dairy cattle.

(72) John Larter's occupation (Cow Keeper), SRC: Marriage banns of son (36) James Thomas Larter to (37) Mary Ann Shrives

"I read your meaning of what Larter means. Yes, there is one surname book that mentions it's probably a nickname for cheater or deceiver, but I don't think this is entirely correct. I have, as founder of the Larter Family History Society in Suffolk, England, undertaken extensive research into the meaning and origin of this surname. My research has in fact shown it to be a corruption of Laughter, an old English spelling of the Scandinavian word 'lattre' meaning 'a place where animals lay their young'. To explain the full meaning and origin of Larter would take up too much space here, but if you would like further details of my research, and of our society, please do contact me."

-- parish registers, St. Botolph Bishopsgate

SRC2: 1861 Census 1 Heart Place, S. Hackney

The 1841 Census for St John Hackney indicates that (74) William was born 1795/96, "outside of Middlesex", and (37) Mary Ann b. in Middlesex. The residence box for Susan was left blank. The 1851 Census shows(75) Susan as a widow. The Free BMD indicates that William died in Hackney in July-Sep. 1849.

The "Schrives" spelling is unique to (37) Mary Ann's marriage record.
